sumthing like tofu? We have quorn here too. And just recently i tried a dish of bean curd(dried and then soaked in water) and black and white fungus.. and it tasted like meat, and filled me up like meat. It's a Thai dish
yes, use meat subsitutes all the time. quorn is ok but i find it abit chewy, therer are other meat subsitutes like vegi burgers / hot dogs / chicken chunks and meat balls from the big supermarkets.
tofu/tempah is soy based bean curd from chinese cooking. does not really have the meaty bite to it but equally delicious cooked right. ie crspy on the outside. Paneer seems like the only alternate meat subsitute in pak/indian resturants or back home.
then there are bean burgers and lentil burgers/kofte. they are always nice. enjoy!
You can use pearl barley as a substitute for ground meat in kababs. Just boil the barley till it is cooked. You don't have to have the water exact, because you can always just pour it off, but don't have too little water in the pot otherwise it may burn. When it has cooled, you can add an egg, chopped onion, garlic and whatever spices and salt that you would use in, say, seekh kabab, and a bit of flour. Let it sit for an hour so the mixture will bind together. Make into patties and pan fry. The texture is exactly like sausage or ground meat kababs.
tastiest unhealthiest way to cook it is to cut it into largish cubes and deep fry in hot oil for 1 or 2 minutes, it expands gets a crispy texture. Then add these cubes to your stir fry or soup or whatever.
healthiest tastiest way is to bake it or grill it, it does take longer like 20 minutes and the cubes can get stuck on the foil but you get a crispy coating. yummy.
I used to eat quorn as a meat alternative when I was pregnant with the first child...for some reason meat and poultry totally grossed out me for whole 9 months.
Why does it have to mimic meat? I mean there are alot of other foods which are excellent sources of protein and are low in fat. You can eat legumes (beans, peas and lentils), soybean (nuts and tofu) nuts, seeds, peanut butter (these have fat but good fats) and eggs (1 egg/day doesn't increase risk of heart problems if you don't have any history of diabetes, high bloodpressue, high cholesterol etc). All healthy alternatives and taste good.
There is also soya mince that comes in packets dried :
and soya chunks/nuggets:
As a vegetarian its nice to have a vegi burger or cheese burger, sometimes its quicker and easier to just grill a burger or throw in some soya mince.
Yes daal is great, and there are other sources of protien like beans and nuts however these fake meat products like hotdogs and meatballs make life alot easier and they are tasty too.
Also you see mcdonalds and burger king advertised on tv and these products are great to fill the gap and mean a vegetarian doesnt feel like they are missing out.
Hey CDG - well soy bean is a good meat alternative but legumes are too carby for my liking and nuts apart from almonds too high in fats.
Already eat eggs :)
Legumes are high in fibre which is actually good for you. It helps lower cholesterol and bad fats in your body. Also slows digestion and keeps you full longer. For anyone who doesn't eat alot of fibre - increase it slowly so it doesn't cause gas and bloating. The fats in nuts are also good fats - such as omega 3 (also helps lower bad fats in body) in walnuts and flaxseed. All in all, this stuff is good for us. I would say better than fake meats with synthetic products - unless the imitation meats are made with veggies and beans etc.
I agree with canadiandesigirl lugumes lentils daal are very good healthwise.
Another source of good protien is Quinoa, said to be the healthiest food source on the planet because it contains nearly 100% of all nutriants needed for a human. it is extremely rich in protein and has fewer carbohydrates than normal cereals, full of group B vitamins, minerals. It contains all the amino acids that the body need to build muscle.
