Measure of success

How do you define 'success' in your career or business?

Success has a deep meaning and its definition does vary as per individual.

In my line of work its just the more technically expert you are the more successful it gets

So how do you judge who has more technical expertise? certifications? Year of experience? How would you quantify that?

Neither education nor certification anymore, its the level of being “subject matter expert”. That is, having indepth knowledge and ability to tackle complex situations like problem solving. Um. and skillset to innovate is a big plus to it.

This still is very subjective though. How would you measure it that way?

Yes its always subjective. Few ways to measure is the number of projects that finish within timeline, amount of automation done to make processes easy and the $$ amount saved as a result of total effort.

You can compare your performance with your goals, with your industry and with your peers, for us we get goals from our corporation which can include customer satisfaction ratings, less errors, professional development etc. I have been one of the top performers in my industry and receive awards every year so I don’t have to guess.

We here live in meritocracy and I realize that in a corrupt hierarchical society hard work may not pay off.

Which profession are you talking about here? CS rating is calculated how? Less errors compared to peers or your previous errors? Professional development in terms of?

Projects against scope vs timeline is definitely a good measure but I am not so sure about your other points.
Automation doesn’t seem like an individual’s success measure, how is it?
Dollar saved or dollar generated, how do you measure either in your industry?

Number of people not working anymore plus number of hours not engaged in the process plus the $expense not spent anymore altogether amount to dollar saved. Automation is an example of it
