Does anyone know what the word/name “Marvi” means and what language it belongs to? Urdu/Sindhi, etc? I know that it comes from Sindhi sufi folklore and I love the name, but I want to know what it means.
Re: Meaning of word “Marvi”
I’ve been told that the name “Marvi” is the Sindhi word for “Marium”.
I tried to search for a source online but I can’t find anything ![]()

The actual word is Marui (Mar-ee) which have changed to Marvi with the passage of time. Marui is one of the seven surmis (heroines) of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai. A girl who was kidnapped by the then Somra King (13th Century), but she didn't accept his offers of lavish lifestyle over her patriotism for her land and people. Marui is still considered as symbol of simplicity and courage in Sindh.
The word Marui literally means chand jaisi (as beautiful as moon)

Its from Sindhi and I've heard that from scholars of Shah Latif poetry. I may find a video link for that, but that would be in Sindhi :)
