as far as i know, i think a "muslim" name is defined as something out of the Quran? other than that, i read that the only stipulation is that the name have a good meaning. if you're muslim, the name doesn't have to be out of the Quran, but it also can't be made up or have a rotten meaning. so shaniqua's out. boo! :P
That seems to be such a vague explanation, I appreciate it though. You don't sound very sure however. I don't think ANYONE would want to name their kids something that has a rotten meaning.
Secondly, if that is the case, I wonder why people have asked me if my wife will change her name to a 'muslim' name, her name is Stephanie, which means 'crown' indicating royalty.
I think, most people just mean eastern name when they say 'Muslim' name which is rather sad because there are a lot of beautiful western names with beautiful meanings like Zachariah which means God remembered. The problem is most people don't know what the heck they're talking about.

yup, you're right, i'm not sure what a "muslim" name would be... theres lots of other muslim cultures too like the persians and the turkish and generally pakistani people don't name their kids from those cultures... i feel like pakistani people feel that we have to give our kid a pakistani name for it to be "muslim".
zachariah versions well into zachary- its a great name for people living abroad who don't want their kids' names butchered. i already said this elsewhere, but gabriel and eva are top of my list, from the angel gibraeel and bibi hawwa, and i have a cousin named mikyle from the angel michael. i think so long as the meaning is beautiful and good, then it doesn't matter. or shouldn't anyway.
of course, you should probably keep pronounciation in mind too. the Fiancé and i love Sebastian but i highly doubt my family in pakistan would be able to pronounce it. so thats no longer an option. :p

i guess muslim names mean names from quran,ASMAA-AL-HASNA(with ABDUL-prefix ofcourse),names of the Prophet Mohammed(SAW),names of the caliphs,prophets,sahaabah.. isnt it ? some people include names from arabic language in musim names too..

So the question to you then is, was "mohammed" a not muslim name because the prophet was named before the Quran was revealed?
