^ well... start by defining what a friend means to you... mention some characteristics... say... companions, fun, helpful etc. and then you can relate those same characteristics to books as well...

they make good travelling companions,
they can be exciting and often lead to discoveries, and when it comes to helpful, you might even get help writing your essay by consulting a book :)

i think the best thing to do when writing an essay like this is trust your own intuition. By relying too much on external influences you won't get a coherent piece. By using your own ideas i think the end result will be better.
However, a few tips on structure and form are that make sure you distinguish seperate topics you want to discuss, e.g. every type of book can be 'seen' as a different type of friend: friends from college, home, social circle etc.
Also, as Umar mentions above, make sure you define well what you see as a friend, and what parrallell there is between real friends and books
