Ok so, my dad was a doctor in Pakistan.
He practiced medicine for 20 years.
Now we moved to the US and he started his own business here.
But now mom and I forced him to come back to medicine again and take the USMLE exam.
How do we go about that? Is it even possible? Can he just take the exam without going through the school again? Has anyone been in this kind of situation? Help please! Advise me what step should we take next and books recommendations aswell..
Thanks SO much whoever helps me. (ALLAH bhala kare aapka!!!)
Re: MBBS to MD
He will have to take USMLE step I and step II. Then he has to do residency for a minimum of three years, during which he has to take USMLE step 3. And then he can start practicing here is US. I dont think there is any other way out. He does not have to go to medical school again, but he will need all his documents from the medical school he went to.
These days the residency in US is getting very competitive. Since he graduated such a long time ago from medical school, his chances of getting residency are not that good. But, its not impossible either.
The best way to study would be to take the Kaplan course and use those books and question bank to study for the exam.
Re: MBBS to MD
my aunt who was a pediatrics in pakistan , currently living in windsor, canada...is a practicing pediatrics there.. and all she did was gives like 5/6 exams and passed all of them in first attempt.. if its possible in Canada.. your dad shud be able to do it in USA too..
best of luck.
Re: MBBS to MD
enroll in USMLE prep courses offered by Kaplan... they're pretty effective and that'd be the easiest way for him to get into the thick of things... he'd get to interact with recent grads and also get practical tips for writing the USMLE exams.
Re: MBBS to MD
agree with lucid chaotic, above. once he has taken his usmle exams, at least step I & II, he should look at research positions to work while he selects possible match programs for US residencies.
meeting doctors in training, in his aspired field of resident training will help him immensely.
Re: MBBS to MD
Of course he can still do it. Like people have mentioned above, forward his transcripts from the med school he attended in pakistan and whatever relating material and then study for the 3 USMLE's. Unfotunately there is no way out of the USMLE because every practicing doctor here in the US must have taken them to practice by law.
Re: MBBS to MD
He can do it he might face problem in landing a residency in some big city but he can complete his residency in an Medically Undeserved Area of USA and once he has gotten his credentials he can try to get a job wherever he wants to settle down ultimately.
