I know there are a lot of guppies who have experience with this. What is the difference between having an MBA degree vs a Ph.D in mkting, accting, etc when looking for jobs in the future. Is having a Ph. D give an inidividual limited opportunities for jobs…since you have such a high degree. What is ur take on this situation?
Re: MBA vs Ph.D
errr... you’re comparing apples and oranges.
While an MBA is meant to be a professional degree program – not even necessarily strictly a graduate degree program when compared to the traditional MA / MSc… a Ph.D. is really an academic research oriented degree. The latter is primarily geared towards candidates who want to join academia or in certain cases industrial research.
Other than employability related differences, the time and cost parameters are vastly different. On a full-time basis, an MBA can take up to 2 years while the average length of a Ph.D. degree in North America is 5 years… and while an MBA is primarily a self-funded endeavor, a Ph.D. is typically funded via scholarships and research grants.
Re: MBA vs Ph.D
sorry I don't mean to compare apples and oranges...I guess I really want to know about the career scope of each degree. I know with an MBA you can pretty much apply to any job as long as you have some experience. But I want to know does having a Ph.D limit you to a teaching and research type jobs only? Or are there other jobs too?

Although you'll find Ph.D.s working in the industry in various capacities, it's still rare. Opportunities are limited by virtue of the candidate's qualifications and extensive background in academia. For someone who doesn't want to pursue a career in academia (teaching and/or administrative service and/or research) or industrial research, there's little reason to opt for a Ph.D.

Once I wanted to do Phd in economics. I was so obsessed with writing Dr. before my name.

hahaha - good thing you didn't go on - you'd have realized that the obsession isn't worth what you have to endure. Trust me... 4.5 years and counting!

hehe
I am very dheet. Its just things didn't work out the way I planned. Didn't really know what it means to be in pakistan.
Plus back then I use to fight back only in ring not in real life.
But I am glad what I do now. inshallah I will make my place.

Dr. Dre is not really a physician and doesnot have a PhD.

Re: MBA vs Ph.D
Phd programs in the areas that you mention are generally very small and schools want to ensure that you know what you are getting into with a Phd program. Most of the school's websites will tell you to consider a Phd only if you want a career in academics and opt for MBA otherwise.
Re: MBA vs Ph.D
^ I guess that is what I really wanted to know...I don't think I see myself teaching...but more in a business type setting. Also what if you are have an accounting degree....would a Ph.D in accounting or finance have different types of jobs or just academics?
Re: MBA vs Ph.D
Phd is more about research work and teaching. MBA will put u in a setting where u can actually work :)
Re: MBA vs Ph.D

Yeh he has a Ph.D. from the school of the hard knocks.
Coming back to the Ph.D. matter, there are a few schools that have Doctorates in Business Management.
I would not recommend anyone starting a doctoral program just because they want the higher qualifications. A Ph.D. is truly a labor of love.
Re: MBA vs Ph.D
Lucid Chaotic ...For Phd's is it 5 years After the MBA too...or after Undergrad. When do people actually apply for Phd. One Professor I spoke to said she realized that she wanted to get one during her Msc .
Re: MBA vs Ph.D
Ask99... most Universities require some form of graduate work before accepting students into a Ph.D. program, although in exceptional cases, I have heard of students getting into a Ph.D. program with only an undergraduate degree. The main admission requirement for many Ph.D. programs is the candidate's aptitude for scholarly research and academic writing, and if these aspects can somehow be illustrated - through prior coursework, industry research, RA positions etc, that generally helps.
The average completion time for a Ph.D. in North America is 4.75 years after a Master's degree, while in Europe, it's around 3 years. The time is primarily determined by the coursework requirement (some Universities require fairly minimal coursework, while others require multiple years of coursework), residency requirement (usually two years), comprehensive examinations (required at most North American institutions), and of course, the availability and helpfulness of a candidate's supervisor and advisory committee.
Re: MBA vs Ph.D
let me clarify a common misconception.... PhD in accounting/marketing does not mean expert in accounting / marketing. It just mean you are trained to do research in that area.

good point kakaballi... sort of goes along what I said in my earlier posts about MBA (and for that matter, many other coursework based Master's degrees) being more oriented towards practitioners... while many thesis based Master's degrees and all Ph.D. degrees are geared towards researchers.
