I’m going to some weddings this summer … and I need to know what is traditionally worn at the mayou festivities. Would you still wear yellow even if yellow/green are traditionally worn at the mendhi? Does it even matter?
Aren't Mayou and Mehndi the same thing?.
No. Mayou is when they throw around that yellow stuff .... haldi I think ... mendhi is when the bride and female guests have mendhi put on. It's pretty much the same thing (as far as I know) except that there isn't usually any dancing at the mayou.....I could be wrong.
I thought yellow is worn in mayun and green on Mehendi... but then, its upto you.
Is Mayou a desi gathering?
^ Nahee, Swiss log manaatay hain Mayou.
For a second i thought you're talking about an oriental wedding (mayou?). Sounds like that anyways.
Yes i believe yellow is the colour to go. Not much dancing at mayuN but theres lots of singing. The word mayuN itself means women. Guess that explains why its strictly for women only. Except I was allowed to go to my brother's wedding's mayuN. Helps being the only cameraman. :-)
I didn't know what the proper term/spelling is for the term mayou/mayun....anyway...
thanks for the responses. :)
I attended my bhabi's mayouN and a lot of ppl were wearing yellow. Cant say I understood the ceremony but I do remember the abundance of yellow.
cool topic Mehnaz ![]()
hmmm
In mayoun, traditionally you have to wear something that’s dark yellow or green or mehndi [greenish/brownish mix] colour.
That is because traditionally on the day of the mayoun, girls put all these beauty treatments like ubtan and haldi [turmeric] n oil on the dulhan and each other and in the end for fun then they throw ubtan on each other [like how hindus throw color on each other at holi]…and the stuff leaves stains on the clothes…so if the mayoun clothes are this color then the stains are not so apparent as they mix with the color of the clothes.
These days girls wear yellow or green or mehndi color at the mayoon, and one of these three colors at the mehendi too but different from the one worn at mayoon…
Mayoon and mehndi are different becayse mayoon is traditionally a day for the culmination of the beautification process of the bride that has been started days n weeks ago. When they say larki mayoon bayth gayi, in Pakistan, usualy like a week or 10 days before her weding [traditionally is supposed to be longer] the girl does not leave her house at all and stays at home and undergoes all these beauty treatments like ubtan and oil and all that, and at that end of that period is the mayoun when her friends and female relatives come and add the ifinal touches to her beautifcation process so she is all ready for the wedding.
Mehendi is more for the relatives and for them to enjoy themselves..Also mehendi is applied to the girl’s hand and feet etc on this day…so that its frresh the next day for her barat day the main wedding day…
[on this day too the mehendi stains the clothes so thats why have to wear the right colors]
these days tho girls get the mehndi done before the actual ceremony…and also ppl normally mix the mayon and mehendi rituals now…
the most common thing done now on mayon is that they bring the girl out in yellow clothes with no makeup [these days tho girls wear light makeup coz movie banti hay and stuf] and sit her in the middle of all the ladies, and all of them wil come one by one and put a little peck of ubtan on her hands and cheeks, out some oil on her head, feed her some mithai and then give her some money…
theres no halla gulla on mayon…and then in the mehndi the next day, the halla gulla happens..
have fun :k:

Thank you Irem darling for that lovely description
(see, I don’t hate ya!
).
I’m really looking forward to this mayun. I’ve never been to one before … not that I can remember.
I wonder if I’ll ever have any of these festivities if I ever get married.

Heck ya Mehnaz! you should totally have them. Why not? I’m sure you and your cousins n aunties n friends will enjoy themselves a lot. You can have just a mayoon and mehendi two in one function too, some ppl do that as well.
Ok, don't shoot me if I am wrong... but I think one important difference between mayun and mehendi, atleast in all families I have seen back in Pakistan, is that in Mayun, only the family and friends of the bride is invited.
Whereas in Mehndi function (there are usually two functions), first the groom's family and friends are invited over to the bride's home and they apply mehndi to her and then the bride's family is invited over to the groom's home, where they apply the mehndi to the groom.
In some families, they also have a separate mayun function for the groom, though it looks kinda weird. In many cases, some close family members of groom also attend bride's mayun function, and in many cases, the groom also sneaks into the festivities.
I think you are right Faisal. :)
Irem thats exactly what they do in Yemen
Allah O Akbar. And we have so many people on this forum, who let go of no opportunity to remind us again and again, that all these rasms are from hindu culture and thus should be strictly shunned. Well, it seems like Yemenis are right there with us. :k:
Speaking of Hindu rasms, I have always thought holi looks like so much FUN! It’s too bad Pakistanis could not incorporate that into our wedding festivities.
Holi is not part of hindu wedding festivities, anyway. Its a stand-alone event. And since you have taken on the Islamic religious clergy on this forum on so many ocassions (last being the lovely swim-suit competition) so might as well, just have fun in Holi too. I mean, they can only kick you out of Islam you so many times. :)

I have never seen or partook in Holi. I just remember seeing it in the movie Sholay ... I think it was that movie where Hema Malini and Dharmendra do that really good song/dance sequence in the village at Holi time. It looked like so much fun. Kinda like running with the bulls in Spain. I would love to experience it ....
... and yes ... how unbelievably Unpatriotic/Unpakistani and Unislamic of me to say such things ....
