I read a really fantastic article last night on Genealogy. It is in the Atlantic Monthly. A Yale scientist has developed a new mathematical model that calculates your genealogy. In short, everyone is related to everyone else going back only about 48 generations (i.e., roughly 1000 years) and we are all related to and descended from Nefertiti and Confucius, and everyone of European ancestry is descended from Prophet Mohammed and Charlemagne. One interesting fact mentioned in the essay is that the island of Ireland has never had more than 10 million people, but over 70 million people in the world claim to be of Irish descent. The model is a mathematical exponential (not linear, not two or even 3 dimensional, but 100s of dimensions).
I can’t wait to take a ride to New Haven to find out about my ancestors. May be I have a little bit of Irish in me (I knew the drinking has had to have some kind of explanation, and now I feel so happy about it).

You can never be descended from only one parent! we have 2 parents, 4 grandparents, 8 great grandparents, etc etc. but we tend to keep track of only one line of descent. So of course we are all related.
