Maxi is more casual and hippie whereas evening gown is smart and more formal like you see at award ceremonies.

Maxis you can pair with a leather jacket and not look like a complete frube, they're flowy and generally printed and worn casually.
Evening gowns are fancy so you can get embroidered ones (I have a black velvet one, dying to wear itt 8)) ), more red carpet-ey, you can wear them to balls, weddings, prom, that kind of thing =]
