Does anyone have information about this? When Mawia was made governor of Suria. He shifted to Roman’s palace in Damascus. When Hazrat reprimanded on this - he argued that if we wanted to rule over these people - we have to live live like them.

Might be true, as Muawiya lived like kings and there are accounts that he showered people with gifts to get allegiance for Yazid.
Even there are accounts where companion of the Prophet like Hazrat Abu Zar (RA) were punished by Hazrat Usman (RA), just because he condemned lavish life styles that crept after victories over different regions.
