I know someone who is currently doing her Phd in Mathematics and has done her Bsc in Environmental Engineering. She is thinking in getting into Finance or maybe Marketing..but not sure..Any suggestion for a field that is heavy in maths? I have suggested her Actuary ..and am currently researching that area.ANy Suggestions are wecome. One more thing she is currently on scholarship so attaining an H1 is also important based on the career path she may choose.

Re: Maths Phd student..wanting to get into Business.

anything stats and math heavy, investmenk banks, ask her to even look into consulting firms like mckinsey and bain etc they look at phD from quantitaive backgrounds, investment banks, research organizations. software houses she would proably go in R&D area

Re: Maths Phd student..wanting to get into Business.

I think the Mckinsey and Bain is the one she was telling me about today that she is looking into. Can u be a little more specific please..R&D=??
Research organizations ..any examples.I will convey this to her :)

Re: Maths Phd student..wanting to get into Business.

well organizatiosn into heavy duty programming use mathemeticians and statisticians, anythign ranging from econometric modeling to developing algorithms for price elasticities etc.

especially look at SAS, SPSS, Business Objects, Cognos.

and for consulting Mckinsey, bain, Booz allen hamilton, Boston cpnsulting group, all of these could be targets, but Bain is probably teh most likely.

another option is for private equity groups like KKR, blackstone, carlyle etc.

Ok ok seriously...she is thinking of auditing some Business classes...one of the thing important to her are jobs that will apply for her H1 too..I mean offered...do you think she should start applying for jobs ...she is in her 3rd yr of Phd...will get details what exactly is she specializing in

Re: Maths Phd student..wanting to get into Business.

some of these groups start their recruitment processwes quite early, especially for bain and mckinsey, there is no harm starting to talk to them now.

Management Science (sometimes referred to as Operations Research) is perhaps the most mathematically intensive discipline within Business/Commerce. My minor in Ph.D. is in Management Science but I can’t handle that much quant.

Many professors who teach Management Science courses in Universities have their Ph.D.s in Mathematics – and some decide to complement these with an MBA later to make it into business schools and get involved in consulting. The types of courses offered in business schools these days include Simulation Modelling, Production Planning, Business Decision Models, Optimization, Transportation & Distribution Management, and various other courses under the category of Supply Chain Management.

In terms of jobs, she can look at consulting opportunities with the likes of McKinsey, AT Kearney, Accenture and others that have a strong Operations Consulting practice. She can also explore R&D opportunities with ISPs (Independent Solution Providers) such as Manhattan Associates, Manugistics/JDA. Last but not the least, if she’s interested in systems development related to business solutions, it wouldn’t hurt to check out opportunities with ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) companies as well.

If she's beyond the point of defending her proposal - i.e. she's considered an ABD (All But Dissertation), then it wouldn't hurt to get started on the job apps now. That being said, the industry doesn't look too favourably upon Ph.D. candidates until and unless their dissertation defense date has already been scheduled. Even then, they'd rather have someone who has a Ph.D. in hand.

Personally, I think she still has some time. If she's in her 3rd year, then she can have up to 2 more years of funding to finish her Ph.D. - so I'd rather wait until at least the proposal stage is done with.

Finance is the best bet... a career in securities and futures is what I would envision. Lot's of stats modelling.
