Maternity Leave

How long did you get for your maternity leave? Are you planning to go back to work? I got a year off, and have to go back end of March 2006. Right now I can’t imagine going back, but it is still in the plan to return for the time being.

Re: Maternity Leave

What kind of work do you do to get a year off? What country?

Re: Maternity Leave

yeah, my work mate got a year off too... did u get two weeks pay in the beginning of the leave though?

Re: Maternity Leave

We get 2 and half year off after the baby is born.. even fathers can take this leave or divide it between the two .. well I have planned 1 1/2 till 2 years. My maternity leaves starts next week, have also taken my holidays, so am going a bit earlier otherwise its two months before the baby is due.
The leaves starts 2 months before the child is born .. you get fully paid for 4 months .. afterwards the social security pays a certain amount to the mother or father for the rest of the leave.

Re: Maternity Leave

I live in Canada, and a year off is standard here. You can share the year off with the father if you wish. You get paid Employment Insurance while you are off, which gives you about $300 a week, or max up to 55% of your salary whatever is lower. Plus usually your employer kicks in something too.

SaadiaB, where do you live? Two months before the due date is awesome.. I started my mat leave two weeks before my due date, which I thought was awesome... but your system is unreal.

Re: Maternity Leave

Wow you guys are actually getting paid for maternity leave!!!!

Here in the US we can get a three months maternity leave but w/o pay! And then there is a leave of absence for a year if you want but obviously that is w/o pay too! I got a year off from work w/o pay. I'm a teacher by profession and don't know if I still want to go back after the year is over.

Re: Maternity Leave

Huma. I'm living in Austria, I think we have the world best maternity law here .. well here its a rule, two months before the kid is born and two months after the kid is born, pregnant women are not allowed to work, (even if you want too) there is no way that its allowed. You many come back after the kid is two months old or go to the extend leave up to 2 and half years which most mothers do. for the duration of these 4 months where its not allowed to work by law u get fully paid afterwards, its the social security or employment security thats pays you for the leave, but its much lesser, its 490 Euros each month plus I think some 180 Euros monthy for the kid (for each kid you get childpay till the age of 18 or higher), plus you are fully insuranced and can go back to your workplace after that duration, which your employer has to garantie.

Neera, I know of american maternity system, honestly its hard for me to gasp after living in this system that the government or social security doesn't give much more leave for the mother or atleast pays some amount for the leave. (my mom has been through the american maternity system)

Here some women get attested from their doctors that they are not allowed to work as soon as they find out that they are pregnant (some reasons that they are bleeding or ect.. ) and get to stay at home from that point, some doctors write it without any hestitation, and then they get it checked by the social security doctors which then has to approve, these females stay at home from the very beginning they find out and get fully paid till the kid is two months old and then go to their extended leave .. but this wasnt for me, some relatives friends even ask me as to why I am not staying at home .. honesty I told them .. I love my work and its not necessary for me to stay at home and be a burdon on the system, if I am capable to work, imagine if all females would do this, how long will this system last??
