Matching clothes to makeup?

I have ahabit of matching my clothes to my makeup. I have even on one occasion beenlaughed at for it (orange eye shadow with orange shalwar kameez), so I’m tryingto figure out how much matching is too much?

I usually keep either my lips or my eyes neutral when doing makeup but recentlyI’ve realised that’s not neccessary. So here are my several questions:

If I wear yellow clothes is it ok for me to wear yellow eye shadow?

If I’m wearing a bright lip colour that matches my clothes, is it ok for me towear eyeshadows that aren’t neutral at the same time, but also match my clothes?

Is it ok for me to wear pink eyeshadow and pink lip colour at the same time?

Is it ok for me to match my lip colour to my clothes or not? Especially if bothare quite bright colours.[FONT=Times New Roman]

Re: Matching clothes to makeup?

It depends on how you wear it. If you have a touch of yellow in your eyes and maybe it's just eyeliner or idk...but just a touch of it, it can look decent. Just don't wash your eyes in yellow eyeshadow and hope that it looks great. A lot of colors don't need to be matched with makeup - smokey brown eyes go with almost everything.

Matching eyes + matching lips + matching clothes is a bit too over the top. You don't want to look like you went nuts with all the red in your makeup collection or whatever color it is.

The colors you wear on your face shouldn't be obvious or over the top, basically. =/ Generally though, matching makeup as you're describing it looks tacky/clowny.

Re: Matching clothes to makeup?

Makeup should compliment your clothes not match the colours exactly.

Re: Matching clothes to makeup?

I think it looks weird with matching make-up, I've been forever trying to convince my cousins not to wear gree and red eyeshadow just because it's in their clothes. Just wear something that goes with it, or is in a similar family of colours but make-up appropriate. I.e. if you're wearing green, you don't HAVE to have green, you can wear something like browns, golds, pinks etc etc. Google some ideas and see what you like.

Re: Matching clothes to makeup?

I try not to match my makeup to my clothes. The only occasion I can remember was when I wore turqoise eyeshadow with my outfit :p

Re: Matching clothes to makeup?

i will agree with Spunk that u can match some wat or go contrasting colours. like if u r wearing yellow is it completely yellow or it has some accent colour in it. u can use that accent colour or u can mix yellow with brown or black to tone it down. coz plain yellow will look hideous n wash u out. or use red, green or blue eyeliner for more contrast. ofcourse u won't wear yellow lipstick. may be b4 the occassion experiment with a few colours and see wat looks best.

Mad i love red n green eyeshadow combo.

Re: Matching clothes to makeup?

Wow! I don’t think I would ever wear red on my eyes :open_mouth: I’ve never seen it be done nice. And I never do complete washes of one colour anymore because I realised that’s when people laugh at me, that’s what happened with the orange eyeshadow :bummer:

I guess everyone has just reaffirmed my original views that you can only play up one feature at a time and the other has to be kept subtle

With the matching lips and eyes I meant hot pink lippy with baby pink eyeshadow? Is that ok?

Re: Matching clothes to makeup?

Mabrook I'm not saying red and green can't look nice, it just doesn't look nice when it's OTT and applied badly!

I've seen some pretty bridal make-up which uses unusual colours, so I think you CAN afford to be creative with colour, just don't go crazy with it

Re: Matching clothes to makeup?

Please NO MATCHING eyeshadow with clothes :bummer:. Or lipsticks for that matter.

Make-up should be worn to *enhance *your natual look, not make you look like a different person.

Re: Matching clothes to makeup?

Too much matching and very vibrant colors etc can look good only on photoshoots or on the catwalk IMO, not easy for everyone to pull it off.

Re: Matching clothes to makeup?

It’s rare for me to go matchy-matchy with my eyeshadows, but I will once in a while - it can look good if done in moderation.

But if you’re doing coloured eye-shadows, do not match your lips as well. For lips, I tend to stick to colours that suit my skin-tone, but match the shades/palette (not exact colour) of the outfit - autumn colours or pinks or reds or nudes - something that goes with the look.

But word of advice - if you’re wearing an orange and pink saree DO NOT wear orange and pink eyeshadows and then complement that with dark orange lip-liner, filled in with pink lipstick - um, that’s not nice

Re: Matching clothes to makeup?

i mostly stay simple but last week i wore red dress with gold work n liver brown bodice so i applied all these colors to my eyeshadow n i actually liked them. i used red lipstick very lightly n topped it with red gloss. i think matching eye shadow looks good but it doesn't with colors like yellow, green, blue. u need to mix 3-4 shades to get the look which is not OTT n then u can't have yellow, blue, green, silver, orange lipstick esp not black ewww

Re: Matching clothes to makeup?

LOL I’m usually never too matchy-matchy but couldn’t resist the last time I went to a davat. Had on a coral outfit and put on coral eyeshadow
I thought I looked good :snooty:

But never matching totally like including lipstick color

Re: Matching clothes to makeup?

Sometimes people like to go monochromatic (many desi's do) which is why we like to get matchy-matchy. It's not a terrible thing if it's done the right way. If you're wearing pink, you can wear pink lipstick...but if you're wearing bright orange, wearing bright orange lipstick might look a little weird. If you really want repetition of color you can add a sweep of it to your lids when doing your eye makeup (just a hint)

Complimenting your makeup is another option, that's going for something that's the complete opposite, it looks great and stands out. For example if you're wearing green, you can have peachy/coral lips and it'll look amazing.....but just remember NOT to add peach/coral to your eye lids otherwise you'll look like a watermelon. When you're lips are bold, keeps the eyes simple.
