Matam Started...

Re: matam saterted...

i think you have been told in this thread a few things
there were few acts during the time of Prophet Mohummad (pbuh&up) and 4th Imam (a.s.)..they did not forbid those acts..I am sure they know Quran a little bit more then you do

2nd..you have been told only a few shias do this kind of matam...some shia scholers say it is ok to do it some say not to do it

and what is this "How can you follow act so religiously and ignore the others?"
what the hell does that mean? what do we ignore ms molvi sahiba?

Re: matam saterted...

dear me... I suppose you are not capable of reading what I posted above, so I will state it again
Last time I read the Quran, performing symbolic matam in which no harm is caused (lightly tapping your chest while listening to the events of Kerbala - which is what I do) was not condemed.
Also - please note that what ever you believe may only be correct according to you.

Therefore, according to you I may be going against the Quran - according to your justifications, but according to me I am not going against the Quran - with my justifications.

Who are you to tell me otherwise?

Re: matam saterted...

sigh I dont even know why i bother...

I meant how can you ignore this ayah only to follow a tradition?
Allah says, "...make not your own hands contribute to your destruction..." (Surah al-Baqarah 2:195); "...nor kill yourselves..." (Surah al-Nisaa 4:29)

If you want to remember the event and grieve for the people that passed away then fine do that. But why do it as a custom/tradition? Why do something which is quite obviously not liked in the Quran? Why do somethign that the Prophet (saww) never did himself?

They were very brave people back then, matam/crying/hurting yourselves makes them look very weak.

Re: matam saterted...

I don't even know why you don't READ.

I'll try bolding the text this time...

It doesn't hurt of affect your body in any way.

i) my hands are not contributing to my destruction
ii) I am not killing myself

Also... FYI: I don't approve of Matam which causes harm either, because it goes against the Quran.

The matam I do is not liked or disliked by the Quran. There are records in history of people that find the Shias significant doing matam, and that is good enough for me. Also - I am not doing it because I want a reward, I am doing it because I want to.

Re: matam saterted...

I know just one thing that the relatives of prophet did do Matam after the assessination of Sayedna Husain (rz). But the people of Kofa did matam as regret because first they invited the family of prophet in Kofa and assured them to help. But after their arrival, they put their hands off from the agreement.

But after the murder of Sayedna Husain, they started matam in regret. They also burnt the camps to burn the letters wich they wrote to prophet's family.

Re: matam saterted...

^there were two kinds of people who supported hussain in kufa
1) political supporters whose only interest was in getting rid of the ummayyads and were not loyal to imam they were the ones easily intimadated by ibn ziyad, they are not counted amongst the shias
2) True supporters of hussain who were either in jail at that time or had to flee from kufa to prevent execution/arrest at the hands of ummayyads, it is true that many of them were not able to participate in the uprising at the time but later they redeemed themselves as the Penitant movement at the Battle of Ayn al-warda where 3000 of them embraced martyrdom.
It is they who started the first matem practices which were largely spontaneous acts of showing grief

Re: matam saterted...

good post. however it must be noted that the ummayyads were not very favourable towards letting shias practicing their religion. So the first group wasn't completely at fault by wanting to get rid of them.

Re: matam saterted...

good post...ignorant people blame the shias for inviting Imam Hussain (a.s.) to kufa and not being there for Him...its too bad they either dont want to read the real history or they are happy to accuse them because they are not sunnis...when Hazrat Meesam went to jail he saw thousands of shias in the jail...but these people just accuse shias for doing matam because they think shias chickened out

Re: matam saterted...

Out of curiosity, is the title supposed to read 'matam saterted' or is it a typo? If it is, then I'll fix it to 'matam started.'

Re: matam saterted...

sadiya, its a typo
it should be started

Re: matam saterted...

I felt so embarassed having no clue what "saterted" meant :o

WaSalaam

Re: Matam Started...

Thanks, fixed it.

Re: matam saterted...

We have reached an agreement then. I guess my question is for people who are literaly bloody.

Re: Matam Started...

I can just express a non-muslim's opinion. We were absolutely awestruck by Matam when I lived in Mumabi in my younger days. My father explained to us that they did it because the pain drove them in a trance to be one with Allah. I have to admit we were impressed with their devotion.
