Masters in Law

Has anyone done an LLM and is there any professional value?

I sometimes miss being in school (yes I know how pathetic) - but was wondering if there is any return for the outlay of time and money aside from opening doors to a career in academia.

Where are you based Sehrysh?

I too am contemplating it...however, having spoken to a few people they say it has very little value in terms of job prospects as employers look more favourably at practical experience.

Yah and most of my university lecturers had done Masters, usually in a specific subject i.e. Masters in Employment Law. So, perhaps if you want to go the teaching route, it may be beneficial.

Re: Masters in Law

I have my JD from the US. One of the lawyers I used to work with (who has since moved) was an associate professor at one of the unis in the LLM program for securities law. When I spoke to him about the LLM even he wasn't very encouraging saying that an LLM while a great course of study - doesn't provide professional advancement.

So I guess the decision for me is whether I want to go for higher studies knowing there's little return. Maybe, I should study something else altogether...

LovelyC - why are you considering your LLM - are you looking for career opportunities?

Re: Masters in Law

Yara what part of US if you dont mind me asking.
I've got a friend who needs some help breaking into the field.

Re: Masters in Law

An LLM is primarily an academic or a research degree at most institutions. I teach in an interdisciplinary program where I interact regularly with people from the faculty of Law, and I rarely see lawyers pursuing an LLM.

On the other hand, graduate programs such as the MBA, MA in Public Policy, MA in Health Administration, and MA in International Affairs tend to attract candidates who have their JD or LLB.

Hi Sehrysh, I was looking at it more so from the career advancement perspective.

Do you have a particular area of law in which you want to specialise?

Securities law.

Re: Masters in Law

Corporate laws

Company law of Pakistan 1984 (if I am not wrong ) many people specialise in that !

Re: Masters in Law

Hmmm, I think I'd contemplate doing a Masters in say International Relations rather than in Law. You don't want to limit yourself !

Re: Masters in Law

International Relations and Law are two very different fields.

But I wish you good luck !

Re: Masters in Law

^ different, but complementary - in fact, some Universities offer joint JD/MA in IR programs
