Masters in Finance

Hi there,

Can anyone please tell me what is the difference between an:

MS in Finance
&
MS in Financial Management

Why one requires prior work experience and the other one does not???

Re: Masters in Finance

I’m sure someone who’s in finance will be able to provide you with a more elaborate answer but in general, a graduate degree in Financial Management tends to be oriented more towards corporate finance with coursework in investments, valuation and portfolio management; while a Masters in Finance is a combination of theoretical and applied courses in options and futures, derivates etc.

I think a Masters in Finance is relevant if you’re planning to be hired as a “quant” by financial institutions while a Masters in Financial Management is geared more towards middle and top management roles in organizations. In this sense, the latter offers a broader discourse while the former offers a deeper understanding of all things finance.

On a continuum of related degrees, a Masters in Financial Management offers more than you would get with an MBA with a concentration in Finance… while a Masters in Finance will truly give you all that’s needed in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics and Finance to jumpstart a career in the financial sector.

There was a thread about Financial Engineering programs here a while ago… look that up for more information.

I suspect that a Masters in Financial Management will have some work experience requirements. Again, this is because this program is more similar to an MBA in that it is a professional program… whereas a Masters in Finance builds largely upon theory and gets candidates ready for a specific industry niche.

Re: Masters in Finance

thanks Umar bhai! your insight has always been helpful for me but the interesting thing is that some australian universities for which I have searched especially university of melbourne, they do not require any experience for MS in Fm whereas for MS in finance, they require at least two years of work experience........ interesting na! But I think an MS in fm is more suitable for me as my previous background is also in management (BS in business administration)...... and I dont like to be a quant and limit my career to finance only (as you have described in M.Fin post)

I am trying to get a job and apply for rather an MBA directly after gaining few years of work experience, but it all depends whether I will get a suitable entry level finance job with some good company or at least some private bank........... I have been trying for past four months now since my graduation but all my efforts have landed nowhere, if this remains the case then I will have to opt for an alternative MS degree.

Further the present circumstances of our country (Pak) and certain family pressures also demand from me to move to australia as soon as possible and settle there for a lifetime after completing my degree and some people have already told me that if you are to wait here for two more years then you will have not this opportunity to be granted a PR or residentship as it is in present time scenario........ as the aussie govt. policies might change.........

So keeping all these facts in mind what would you suggest me Umar bhai???

Waiting for your response!
