What was the role of Master Tara Singh in division of Punjab?
Why didn’t he agree to the idea of United Punjab?
I read that he was approached by Muslim League’s top leadership for getting consent of Sikh community to be with Pakistan. Many of important religious places of Sikhs were in Pakistani Punjab and may be consent of Sikh population to be with Pakistan would have avoided the massacre that followed due to division of Punjab.
Tara Singh was Anti Muslim League. He was convinced that he Sikhs as a minority could not live peacefully in a muslim country even though many religious sites fell in Pakistan. Congress and Sardar Patel convinced him that Indian constitution would be secular and I think this was a deciding factor. After independence he wanted a secure political space in India for Sikh communities but state boundaries was created based on language and Nehru did not want to risk creating any state on linguistic basis. But after the '65 war when sikh officers and soldiers fought bravely, their wish was granted and the existing state was divided into Sikh Majority Punjab and Hindu majority states of Himachal Pradesh and Harayana. Tara Singh died shortly after this i think.
The India was secular, socialist, democratic republic with every minority being given legal recognition and there was clear separation of religion from state, sikh worded their demand of seprate state in such words that it appeared as if their demand is against creation of Pakistan robbing of any possibility of sikh state. Sikhs were minority in west punjab and nearly 60% of the area of Punjab was populated by Sikhs in minority.
The demand for Punjabi suba came up after Jats emerged as leader, Tara Singh was born hindu who converted to sikhi while studying in college, nehru in his life never agreed to separate punjab suba as demand was religious and punjabi and hindi were mutually acceptable, a socialist nehru never agreed on religious lines, Tara Singh declared fast unto death for Punjabi sooba, but nehru was adamant and finally Tara Singh broke his fast after 40 days, he was punished for breaking pledge for five days and ended his life in ignominy. The demand of Punjabi Sooba was acceded by Indira, she wanted to dislodge akalis from power and Giani Zail Singh of Congress was the main lead
my new punjabi jatt friends are saying for them no defference between hinduism/sikhism
they visit both temple/gurudawara,one guy went on to say sikhism is a sub group of hinduism (this guy is a jatt sikh)

I think that this belongs to Punda intelligence who know how to assimilate other faiths into their own :)

Interesting. What was the impact of Khalistan on the demand of separate Punjab Sooba?

So the Indian Punjab was divided based on the religion too and the Waris Shah's Punjab was divided into four parts :( One with Pakistan and three parts with India.
from my knowledge people of haryana and himachal don't speak punjabi
haryanvi and hindi is respectively spoken in those states nothing to do with religion, atleast from all the punjabis i met (both hindus and sikhs) they kind of pratice both religion
may be iam wrong kaur can explain
So Haryana and Himachal remained part of Punjab although the population was not Punjabi speaking BTW, what is the basis of forming provinces in India? Is it language or some other criteria?
In 1956 States Reorganization Act came into effect and states were drawn based on ethnicity and language. For Example: Bombay State was split into Maharashtra and Gujarat based on language (Marathi and Gujarati). Punjab was also divided along linguistic lines, creating a new Hindi-speaking state of Haryana and transferring the northern districts of Punjab to Himachal Pradesh, and making Chandigarh, the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana, a union territory . So the division of Punjab was also on linguistic grounds though Punjab became a Sikh majority state.

same thing down in south madras presidency
my people had to fast onto death so that nehru gave seperate state for telugus from madras presidency ,later when other half got freed from razakars of nizam both parts were combined to form new state for telugu speaking people
According to uncle wikipedia, the main languages spoken in Himachal are Hindi, Dogri and Pahari. 'Pahari/Hindko' is the language spoken in Azad Kashmir, Northern Punjab, Hazara District of KP.
haryanvi seems to be a mix of Urdu and Punjabi, I guess the ranghaRs speak that language (in Pakistani Punjab) and people make fun of them. :)
It kind a makes sense as well as Haryana is in between Punjab (Punjabi) and UP (Hindi) so no wonder the language there is a mixture of both. As fas as Himachal is concerned that borders Kashmir (Dogri/Pahari), Punjab (Punjabi) and then UP/Uttar Akhand (Hindi) hence the languages spoken there.
It is amazing that a jatt said so, jatts are most orthodox type of sikhs who were alaways against such thoughts:)
Intelligence is something that this race always had, I think knowledge and smartness are in there genes, they compete hard ang gain excellence in their field with great perserverence, something that other indians should learn from the caste they hate the most and still can’t beat them:D
Punjabi Sooba wasn’t demand of Khalistan, Anandpur Sahib resolution that sikhs had passed has tried to contain central governement role to foreign affairs, finance, defense etc, never before Jarnail Singh Bhidranwale the demand of Khalistan became real, Akalis stated explicitly that Anandpur Sahib resolution is not for sepration from India.
It was good decision, why have such a big state which can’t be managed properly and speak multiple language. Azadpur, Jahangirpuri went with delhi, rest with harayana and Himachal, Patiala is southern most district of punjab. Only problem partition always brings is partition of resources and especially water:)
The duality is result of Pundas, Pahari Dogra Rajput wanted to fix pundas who were annoyed by increasing popularity of Gurus in Himachal done by Pundas, they sided with Wazir khan to fix them, Kashmiri Pundas went to guru Tegh Bahdur for help who intern appealed to Hazrat Auragzeb, who had developed a method of killing by asking people either to convert or get killed, Guru Tegh Bahadur was martyred by Zinda peer, and guru gobind singh formed Khalsa which eventually ruled punjab, but credit of destroying Mughals goes to another set of pundas of maharashtra called Peshwas:k:
Nizam part of Bidar, Gulbarga, Raichur and Bijapur are part of Karnataka, these are called Hyederabad karnataka and their independence day is 17th september, the end of operation polo.
Yes Rangharaas are from haryana who moved to pakistan in 1947.
All were part of british dominion and are populated by same set of ethnic people, yadavs, jats, Gujjar, rajputs, baniyas and Pundas:)
