MASSIVE cutting of trees for implementing mega developmental projects in Karachi is likely to culminate with the onset of ecological disaster of unprecedented nature. Clouds of dust loom most of the times in the areas where project activities are in progress. Asthma and such other respiratory diseases are already on the increase.
The public is being told that many more trees would be planted in place of those being cut to pave the way for widening the roads/laying of gas/water /sewerage lines, etc. But it is the common observation that due to poor aftercare most of the plants die within days/months after their plantation. Moreover, plants take several years to grow to the size that may have impact on the environment.
In the above scenario, I would request the city nazim to issue necessary directives to the officials concerned to speed up tree plantation and ensure aftercare so that the impending ecological disaster may be averted.
Moreover, it is proposed that a well- planned tree plantation campaign may be launched in the forthcoming monsoon season in which NGOs, specially small community-based organisations may also be associated.
Too many large and old trees of malva, legume, peeple, bargad, neem and sufeeda have been cut during the last two years. I am so sad to see barren Karachi roads now.
^^ they are being cut down for the Karachi Expressway....
I hope these guys have enough sense to re-plant trees
Without trees, the temperature and pollution will get even severe
What Karachi needs are massive parks of lush greenery
and the right trees, trees that can handle the local climate. I had posted an entire study that was done on this topic, i.e. to plan indigenous trees where you can grow many with teh amoutn of water you would need to sustain an outside variety. in addition they are better equipped to deal with subsurface issues and with the type of water.
serach for it, you may find it.
trees have to be cut. I mean there is only so much you can do to go around them. the hope is always that environmental impact is assessed and measures taken to avoid some ecological catastrophe
u rote we need proper study to find out perfect plantation dat may bear n prosperously adapt dat habitat. lakin bhai KHI may to most of the land is unable to grow ny thing due to soil erosion. WAHAN ABB KIA UG SAKTA HAI?
(so my POV is, wat ever is left…SAVE IT…rather than smuggle the wood )
there is a proper study, and while external or non native varieties of plants may have a tough time, native plants do well.
for smuggling the wood they can cut forests, its easy no one sees you etc. These are real needs, and one has to look at it short term and long term both.
with water shortages, do you keep giving water to one big tree now...for decades, or you cut that and give the same water so 4 trees can grow on the same amount of water for decades. Although a balance has to be kept.
Not only is the amount of water an issue but how the native varieties deal with the salinated water as well as subsurface issues difference between native and non native trees.
^^ well sir dat is KARACHI-PAKISTAN.
its good how u r using ur studiez, but have a look on other thingz, ppl don have clean water to drink, n to do other chorez. instead they will prefer to wash their carz, whereas u r expecting them to water these plants. o come on
(dats y i m saying SAVE WAT U HAVE) n for plantation hehhehe...those trees n plants will only get their way into those officals house.
(don tell me u think dat there aint in corruption in Pakistan :D)
threadstarter talked about Palm trees in ur given thread. her concernz r fair. whereas indeed palm trees may be the best choice...but i think couple of yearz ago their was same strategy applied near KHI airport...n i think my father talked about the failure of that development.
zobia, please read the attached govt reports on the reasons and all for it. I am not goign to rehash everything that I had to do back then to irem.
as far as failure of the development, could you post the goal, the results and all rather than a general statement of someone's opinion being something being a failure.
before we go forward, can you also tell me your age and educational background, that always helps :)
WAT GOVT REPORT??? is GS link is a govt report, or respectfully speaking u think u r govt?
n wat u wana know about my educational bg (if u think im illiterate…go for dat…cuz i m betteroff calling myself illiterate than so called degree(s) holder )
