GUJRANWALA: A top police officer has refused to accept police orders of arresting political activist here on Wednesday.

All good points. So the three largest parties nationally and in the three major parties within the two biggest provinces (by population) have no respect for democracy.
The army has no respect for democracy either.
Makes it hard to be optimistic about democracy in Pakistan. Our political parties appear to view democracies through the words of a Turkish politician in the 80s... "Democracy is like a streetcar. You ride it until you get to where you want and then get off".
At this point the only party that actually seems to be consistently acting responsible is the Awami National Party.- and that too only by virtue of not doing anything major wrong.

No NRO, no Zardari, no presidential rule, independent judiciary ALONG with an faily elected Govt, and a free media. I think thats what we need and WILL work.

The PPP would have still declared Zardari as Chairman in-exile; he would continue manipulations from abroad.
The election of the PPP was fair - all they needed to win was Benazir's popularity, she didn't even need to be in the country. All they would have needed was a puppet who could have frankly said that he was running to represent Benazir and take her orders and change the law so she could return and he still would have won.
And the PPP would still be petty and try to hack down the PML-N, because that's what our political parties do (destroy their rivals).
The issue is not one of laws, or individuals, or judges. The problem is a sick political culture of parties that think they are entitled to power and its spoils, and an army that thinks it can save the country from the parties but which itself time and again just turns into another party.
Pakistan's collective political mindset has not moved on from the feudal, Mughal era. We are left with political parties competing for decades to be the new Mughals. Parties with a royalist mentality that put on a facade of democracy.
The Mughals ran dynastic government, with power passed from father to child, with no distinction between the public wealth of the nation and the private wealth of the rulers. They disallowed opposition to their rule.
Pakistan's political parties operate as dynasties too, with power passing from father to family (Zulfikar to Nusrat to Benazir to Zardari to Bilawal in future; and Nawaz to his brother to his nephew) . And like the Mughals, they don't distinguish between public and private wealth (only now, we call it corruption). The PPP in power has cracked down on its opponents ruthlessly for 30 years, the PML too muzzles the press and its own internal critics when it is given the chance.
There is no PCO anymore. Its the people's judiciary now, that will make sure criminals, money laundering thugs, and murderers in exile never return.
