Martial Law In Chinese Province

Frankly speaking I am not aware of the exact background, both from ethnic and political standpoint, of Chinese Muslims’ unrest. May be one of the guppies can enlighten us more on this issue.

Martial Law In Chinese Province
2:52 pm PST, 1 November 2004

Martial law has been imposed in parts of the China’s central province, Henan after clashes between the majority Han community and the Muslim Hui ethnic group.

Several people have been reported killed in the violence, while residents say some houses were set on fire.

One report says the clashes began after a taxi driver from the Hui group knocked down and killed a girl from the Han community.

The violence is reported to be the worst between the two communities for many years.

wth is going on around da world these dayz!? sigh

There is a sizeable Muslim population in China and one of the provinces (I can't recall the name) has a Muslim majority. That province used to be part of a great Islamic empire and now finds itself annexed to atheist and communist China. Just as in the Phillipines and recently in Thailand, Muslims are coming out and demanding the same kind of independence and voice that Muslims in the sub-continent wanted. These countries annexed Muslim areas as part of outcomes of wars or colonial boundry creation. They want independence...

What would you say if a hundred years from now the people of Tibet rose up and demanded independence from China. We all know how China annexed Tibet. A hundred years from now people would be saying what is wrong with these Tibetans wanting independence. Why can't they just live happily like everyone else...

They are called Uighur Chinese in the north western Chinese border.
Fighting for the right to practice their religion (Islam ofcourse), being repressed since Chinese are Communist (hence Godless).:Salute:

Just to add really cool people, ran into them in Karachi Airport back in 1994/5 they were coming back from performing Hajj. It was wild to see Old chinese dudes dressed in that white sheet thingy (the ones that hajjis wear) saying their prayers in the airoport and drinking holy water ( let me embarrass myself the :ahaa: aab-e-zum-zum).

Fyi - The "white thingy" that Hajis wear is called an Ahram.

^^ thanks. Here is a link that might be of help.

It isn't it strange that Pakistan is opposed to this movement?

^^ One reason that Pakistan opposes :nono1: this movement maybe be because of Pak-China relations.

Pak-China relations are more important then Islamic relations?

Sadiqaan, I would believe that Pak-China realtions are more important than Islamic relations. Reason being that Pakistan is a state and states generally deal with other states not movements and organizatons. Pakistan is also being run by the military at the present moment and Pak army benefits from healthy China relationships. If Pakistan had a more Pro-Islamic govt then maybe the party in power could put pressure on China. But Muslim League (Nawaz Shariff) and PPP (Bhutto) did not criticize China’s repression towards Uighurs, BTW China is not only repressive to Uighurs but also to other free wheeling movements such as Falun Gong.
Uighurs want a separate state carved out from, or all of Xinjiang province(northwest of China). This intereferes with the oil-pipeline that Chinese plan to build across the region (this work maybe well underway). I happened to be in Pakistan recently and was surprised to see signs on highway/s in russian and chinese, upon inquiring I was told that this was in preparation to the pipeline. Pakistan will benefit from this pipeline and hence in Pakistans best interest to keep silent on the Uighur issue. Simply put it is not in Pakistans strategic or regional interst to pester China over the plight of Uighur Muslims.
I see your point that Islamic relations are being put on side over Pak-China relations, unfortunately Foreign Policy is not straightforward :rotato: at times and is not dictated by religious preferences either.

but just because something is good for us in terms of physical wealth and materials as opposed to being good for the moral and islamic reasons, it doesnt mean we agree with it or condone it. i abhore the pak china relationship it it is at the cost of lives of muslims. but one day inshallah we will set our priorities straight and show chinesse communists who is the real inheritor of the land of Allah. ameen

I am only posting what I know of the issue, not necessarily my opinions, but will highlight where I do opine.
