He probably understands the value of Islam that's why he even considered converting. If the desire is there, the practice will eventually follow.
Hey, not caring about parents feelings is a misfortune. It is one thing to disagree with their opinion, but disrespecting their thoughts and needs is unfair to the ranking that Allah has established.
