well, i’ve always thought or learned that it is un-islamic for women to not get married.
is this really true? or have i been misinformed?

I don't know if its 'un-islamic' or not, but its highly encouraged because its saves you from many other sins. Also its a sunnat of Holy Prophet (PBUH)
zidee, there is extensive writing/opinion on this. From what I have read, the majority opinion is tha it is not wajib on everyone, there are cases where it is not wajib(obligatory). So no, it is not always unislamic to not get married. smile
It is sunnah.
Marriege is highly recommended in Islam, with men and women being encouraged to marry as soon as they are able. It is in fact seen as an act of worship and every act of fulfilment between husband and wife is a charity.
