I almost forgot that there’s anything else that needs to be done besides Nikkah to get married! I keep hearing about this marriage license thing but don’t know what it is. Is it done before or after Nikkah? Is it a long procedure, etc etc?
Re: Marriage License!
well u can have ur nikkah and evreything and Islamically you are wed..but i guess "legally" according to the state, if u don't have a marriage license, ur not married.
Re: Marriage License!
so i've heard you can get your marriage license before you're islamically married. what kind of information does the license include? does the imam have to sign off on it declaring you as married?

Re: Marriage License!
yeah get your license because the imam will need to see it before he marries you... after your wedding, he will give you paperwork that you need to mail in to the government and they send you your marriage certificate, which proves you're married.
Re: Marriage License!
i just had my nikah-nama certified by the county clerk's office....they said it qualifies as a marriage license...

Marriage license and marriage certificate are two different things. I think county cleck certified your nikha nama as marriage certificate.
Marriage license entitles you to get married (Before the fact). Marriage certificate certifies your marriage( After the fact).
Re: Marriage License!
so are you supposed to get both? license to wed and certificate to attest?
Re: Marriage License!
In the state of Illinois, obtaining a marriage license is an easy peasy thing. You go in to the County clerk's office with your fiance, and tell them you are applying for a marriage license. they will take down both your info and have you both sign some paper work perhaps. There is a small fee, i think in IL its 30 dollars. You then recieve the marriage license, and in our case it was just our info printed on normal paper. The marriage license gives you authorization to get married, if that makes any sense. The license is valid 24 hours after its issuance.
When the nikah is done by the imam, he will fill out his part on the license that he legally married you in whatever state you are and that he belongs to this council or masjid. You then either take it to your county clerks office or mail it to them. You then recieve your marriage certificate or nikah nama in mail.

you also need to fill out this form when you pay the $130 for your marriage license… the form is here–

you can also apply for a marriage certificate online, which is what we’re doing… its $15 for a short form which only lists the marriage details, or $22 for a long form which has all the info plus signatures, etc. super easy process!
