sniff It will never happen. She rejected me. Said I was not up to her standard! ![]()
Re: Marriage and the Field
A few questions: would she have to be with you for all that time? Are you sure that this is something that you will not change your mind about later on? What if you have kids? In your line of work, would moving around alot be necessary?
Personally, i'd be okay iwht it only if I wasn't obligated to go with him for that amount of time. Then again i am saying this after having lived apart for a while and taken all the heat for it (aahh selective amnesia..gotta love it).
Basically you'd need a woman who has her own career, friends, interests etc to keep her busy. However, once kids come into the picture, you might want to reconsider these "plans." Or not. I mean generally speaking...we all say we will always/never do something but we change our minds as our circumstances and needs change.
Re: Marriage and the Field
Nope, I would so not be ok with it!
Re: Marriage and the Field
You can't stay in the fieldwork stage of your career forever. Soon you'll end up riding a desk in NY or Geneva and that's when you'll be ready for that ball and chain.
I'm waiting for you to get back to a desk job - I'll pay you a visit and we can laugh about the people in Life forum :D
Re: Marriage and the Field
Why I saw this thread so late ?
Everybody has said what needed to be said already.
Kudos to all the participants for such an entertaining thread. :k:
Re: Marriage and the Field
i am not sure what it is talking about,
Re: Marriage and the Field
Oh my God! Are you kidding me? That'd be a dream come true for me IF I am also taken on these missions.
sigh Being stranded in some Namibian desert, making a narrow escape from enraged militia. Just being in Africa would be good enough for me.
But then I guess I am not an average desi!

Re: Marriage and the Field
catty....it would be perfect! meow! go for it!
I am currently in Darfur. Certainly not a family duty station. Also no matter how much I complain about the hardships here - no water, no power/electrcity, no entertainment (no tv and such) and working 7 days out of the week for 6 weeks straight - I do actually enjoy the work I am doing. I am helping people at the end of the day and that is rewarding in of itself.
The concern is I would like to do this regularly. Be based out of New York or Geneva and head to the field 6 months to a year out of every 3 years. Sitting behind a desk and reading reports is not my kind of thing. So I am once again asking the opinion of our very average and very definition of desi females to see if they would be willing to put up with my "plans"?
PS. I got the very average and desi part right, right?
You seem like an ideal rishta candidate!
Medic lets see when I get out. I am rather enjoying myself here. Two weeks ago I was running around Rebel Territory in Darfur, chatting with JEM and SLA. Now that was fun. Man I haven't seen you in what 3 years now? Need to make a visit state side. Oh yeah you seen Mrs. Mushi yet?
As for a desk job, If I get one, hell it better be in Geneva or New York. Preferably New York. We can have lunch in the Delegate's Dining Room again.
@muspus you have no idea how ideal a candidate I truly am!
Sara honestly these plans are just things I want to do. I enjoy working where I see a direct impact on the lives of people. Most field missions are family stations. Lebanon, Kosovo, Cyprus, Liberia etc are all family stations. So yeah she can be there with me. But knowing what I know from my past 1 year here, Hell would have to freeze over if I were to have my family with me in the field. There are times when we go from calm and quiet to a full fledged "run for your lives" evacuation in a matter of hours.
The generic idea is that my work should have a direct impact on people. So I can easily take a job that requires me to travel to locations for projects for 1 or 2 weeks out over every 3 to 4 months. But I wanted to gage a reaction on how women would react to spending 1 year away from the hubby.
Of course I am mentioning extreme cases to get a judgement on the reactions and then apply the one that best suits my situation.
And guys Cantankerous was taking the piss.
well … the credit goes to me and SaadiaB!! ![]()
