Re: Marketing or Accounting.
dont know. but you should folow your interest, talents. the best career is the one when you have all your passion and heart into it. not when you just do it for the sake of it.
my dad didnt let me study marketing saying it wasnt a good field for "girls" but till date i blame him for spoiling my career cz i studied finance having no interest in the subject. did not follow my inclinations so my talent for marketing stayed unpolished and studying a subject which was so different from my nature, has left me in the middle of no where.
im hanging in the customer service now.
always follow your heart and your personality and interests and inclinations. if you do a job just for the sake of it then dont expect much in return.
good luck
Re: Marketing or Accounting.
WB thanks for that advice I doubt I will enjoy working longer than a year though :D
On serious note what I meant to say was that a friend from pak visited and said that even the number of chartered accountants is increasing back home so marketing is hotter now a days. Just wondering what other professionals think?
Re: Marketing or Accounting.
marketing would always be hot. always. there will always be products which need to be marketed and sold. yeah sure same thing can be said for finance also but that's a boring thing for boring people. i mean not exciting. and marketing keeps you healthy. i mean sitting on a chair all day long staring on your computers screen and books trying to resolve some accounting error....... eventually growing a tummy, getting bald and wearing thick glasses... what kind of life would that be?
unfortunate, i wear glasses, i would have loved to be a marketing guy.
Re: Marketing or Accounting.
^ oho… Finance != Accounting ![]()
btw I love finance… it has cross-functional applications and you can easily tie it in with any business function including marketing… I’ve used finance principles in almost all my consulting engagements.
Wise One - I don’t particularly know the job market in Pakistan, but conventionally, accounting is the safer of two choices, but you need to have a fairly focused scope and an aptitude to learn and practice financial reporting, taxation, and auditing type aspects.
With marketing on the other hand, there’s more breadth as the discipline draws upon other fields such as psychology, sociology, statistics and economics. Also, even though there isn’t as much of security graduating with a credential in Marketing Management as opposed to Accounting Management, companies are always going to need good marketers to manage profitable relationships with customers.
You also need to realize that both areas also offer a multitude of specializations that you can pursue and you’ll prolly have to do so at some point, because surviving in the industry with generalist credentials isn’t really an option anymore.
Re: Marketing or Accounting.
Ty Umar , i probably will have to look into specializations in Pakistan.
Re: Marketing or Accounting.
Generally speaking, Accounting profession is almost recession-proof, whereas Business Development jobs are usually the first one to go through head count adjustments when the Company is going down.
However, the kind of bonuses that Marketing folks can earn makes every other department drool.
Whatever you do, you have to be good at it. There is no place for mediocres.
