Marketing and Business Management Careers

Marketing and Business Management Careers
Do any one has real life experiences with these degrees. How is the work? What sort of a personality is required for women who may pursue this degree?. Also Human Resourses…is it really a good line of work for women? Any experiences

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

amber,

marketing is such a varied discipline, and when you add business mgmt to the question it becomes even more broad, HR is yet another different field.

the personality required varies based on role, field and type of company and industry, lets use sales mgmt for an example, sales mgmt for a software or consulting services company is very different than pharmaceuticals, or industrial controls.

similarly within marketing, you would see different personalities in research, versus product development, versus product mgmt, category management, product marketing, strategic marketing, promotions, advertising, marketing communications.

even in just marketing research you will find heavy duty statistics and analytics people, and visionary creative types looking for trends.

My background is in marketing and strategic mgmt, and my roles have included strategy consulting, strategic marketing, product development, product mgmt etc.

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

Is finance completely separate category or does it comes under business management or accounting? Also what are some career opportunities in finance? What kind of minor is better suited with it or works better with a finance major?

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

^ U better not be asking me lusi :hehe:

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

lol...no, i am not asking you but anyone who knows.... :D

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

My whole day was spent researching the fields..now me brain all fried:D...U know let me tell u about accounts, my friend did that then moved from Fidelity after a few months to another company where she was hired as a controller. This move really moved her career big time. And all this in one year.

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

I would really like to hear something about finance from someone who knows because my bro has choosen finance as his major.... ( i am just a little lazy to open a new thread :( ....lakin it is the same school of thought i guess :D)

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

Bachelors in Finance ...I think...but I'll confirm in the morning too. Did I mention she is a workaholic though:D....she was promoted before the company policy is (the employee has to be working 6 months at least with them)

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

ahan... workaholic is a goodthing but one should keep some balance :)

i just want to know the scope of finance (from your friend's experience it looks good) and what different career oppertunities are out there for finance majors, opinions from different people over here presently in the field. And what will be a good minor with a finance major.

hey thanks for the info :D

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

I know she started working in a bank...as she was doing her Bachelors.Left after she had her kids. Now back as her kids r school going. She is an amazing person as they as a family also battled her 3 year old's cancer. She is an amazing mother.I have seen it all unravel in front of me and really know wat a gem of a person she is.Really hardworking.:)The finance field to my knowledge is pretty decent.

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

From what you are saying, she does sound like an amazing person, may Allah bless her with health, happiness, and sucess. :)

May bro is also working in a bank right now, so ya I hope his present work experience will help him once he graduates. inshahAllah.

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

^^ Thank you...She is an amazing,And her son had the cancer...Mashallah its in recession. And I pray for her too,she is having some health issues herself too. Ameen.
Its good to hear that your brother is getting good experience at a bank.Wat is he majoring in.And wat is your major:)

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

He has decided on Finance, hence all these questions :) and mine is Elementary Education.

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

Oh ok...yours is a pretty neat major too.Which classes r u planning to teach. Have u looked into Montessorri education too.Their concept really fascinates me.

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

well I will be certified for Pre k - 6 but I am more into grade 1, 4 and 5. Actually these are the grades I have been working with therefore as of now I prefer them because of my experience with them. I really don't want to get into pre k stuff, though I love those little kids, they are adorable and all but I just want to stay in the elementary section not the montessori.

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

“Finance” or “Financial Management” can typically be pursued as a concentration in an undergraduate BBA or BCom degree… but I also know of schools that offer a BSc in Finance etc.

Lately, there’s also been an increasing trend towards Financial Mathematics etc. which is really an interdisciplinary offering between Math and Business.

I’ve personally witnessed the growth of job prospects in finance over the past 5 to 7 years… in my opinion it is by far one of the fastest growing niches in business management following closely by accounting. Many of my friends from the MBA program has transitioned into roles in i-banking (investment banking) and are working for brokerage firms as well as for commercial banks. This is not to say that those are the only options… financial analysts also work as trade analysts, credit analysts, risk advisors, personal financial advisors etc.

Besides this, they are needed pretty much anywhere you’d expect to see capital asset evaluations, mergers and acquisitions etc.

I personally am very interested in getting my CFA (certified financial analyst) designation over the next few years. A lot of undergrad and grad students from business school supplement their degrees with the industry endorsed certification.

Hope this was helpful.

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

Oh and Lusi in terms of a minor to go along with Finance, its really up to the individual. There are a lot of synergies to be exploited if someone likes Accounting – either Financial Accounting and Management Accounting could work well.

Another great area to consider as a minor would be Operations Management / Decision Sciences. This is the background that I come from and am tapping into to shape my interests in Finance.

Whereas all the streams I’ve mentioned above are quantitative in nature, personally, I would recommend a minor in a non quantitative stream. MIS, HR, Marketing could be looked into. This would give someone a very well rounded educational background in both the quantitative as well as qualitative aspects of business.

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

Umer bhai, that was really helpful. Thank you!

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

Umar as a marketing practitioner, I have to say that while the curriculum may seem non quantitative to people, in reality marketing is a very quantitiative field. market shares, category performance, P&L, pricing, product planning, product lifecycle mgmt, and even advertising planning and execution is run by numbers.

sadly academia for the most part still cant show the reality in how the field is presented to a student.

Re: Marketing and Business Management Careers

^ Fraudz... I know what ya mean... at both the undergrad and grad levels, I've personally only seen a Marketing Research course that goes into some details of quantitative aspects of marketing...

other than that, I've personally taken 5 courses in my MBA in marketing... and other than personally using some decision models for corporate reputation and brand management in one of my projects, I can't remember an instance where we had to use quantitative methods.

In the real world though, I've worked on a couple of high-tech marketing and internet promotion projects and I have to agree with you... you can't tell a marketing story without the use of scorecards, KPIs, GRPs etc.
