Mark Waugh retires from international cricket

Mark Waugh has announced his retirement from international cricket today after being dropped from the Australian squad for the first Test against England.
Waugh, 37, told a media conference at the Sydney Cricket Ground he felt he still had the ability to play at international level. However, the 128-Test veteran said he might not have made the most of opportunities last season against New Zealand and South Africa to consolidate his position in the Australian side.
Waugh said he had played in a great era for Australian cricket, which included a 16-Test winning streak and the 1999 World Cup victory. He did not see age as an issue in selection, and said his replacement Darren Lehmann, 32, might have five years or 50 Tests ahead of him.
In Tests, Waugh made 8029 runs at 41.81 and claimed 59 wickets at 41.16, while his extraordinary fielding yielded 181 catches. He also scored 8500 runs and took 85 wickets and 108 catches in one-day internationals.
Waugh plans to play for New South Wales this summer, and has also received offers from counties in England to play at the end of the Australian domestic season.
Great batsman but his time came and he made right decision.
Probably one of the best openers in one day cricket, it was sad that his career had to end this way.
I would love to see his stumps blown away by Shoaib in South Africa but too bad.

but u saw him blasting through in the final of the world cup '99 at Lords. and probably would've witnessed it again in South Africa.
yaar. sorry to say. but shoaib bowling at him was not the topic of discussion.
no matter what u say. he was a classy batsmen. and he played in the glory days. he was a member of the world cup winning side in '99, and also of the side who reached the final in '96.
how many of u remember his superb batting in '96 world cup.
International cricket will miss him.
Although, Mark could make any team for just being a great slip fielder, although signs pointed downwards after the Oval Test.
I noticed, Mark quit playing the pull shot, which he so used like it was nothing. Even that ton knock in England at the Oval, he never played a pull, which thus showed his decline.
To think, Darren Lehmann now finally gets a rechance to play again. I expect Lehmann to take full advantage of the oportunity.
I just wish, that Mark would have retired after the Ashes with his head held up high. Maybe even playing in the World Cup squad with Steve would be even better.
Mark and Steve deserve a better retirement farewall, what better than saying goodbye against arch rivals England, that too Test #5 at their home in SCG, with the Ashes Win too.
