Salam;
When a husband and wife indulge in sexual activity at night, they will need to perform ghusl b4 they can perform prayers.

Dose that answer ur question, and Yes this is what people do.
Gandalf, I think the recommended way is to cleanse yourself (take a bath or whatever) after the act, and not sleep rightaway. That way (1) u will not sleep in the state of janabatt and will be clean while u sleep, and (2) at fajr time, u only get up and do wadu (abolution) if you don't intend to take a bath at that time.
Another option might be to have sexual intercourse after praying the fajr, and take a bath after u wake up in the morning.

Faisal, are you assuming that intercourse will occurr ONLY ONCE per night?. I would beg to disagree. And who the hell wants to take a shower after all the action. The only thing a normal couple would do is to cuddle up and go to sleep in eachothers' arms.
INSHA ALLAH Ill go through some other websites also and yes all other questions regarding this and about Islam can be found out here www.islam-qa.com
PCG you can also find all the related matters and answer to your query from the site mentioned above.
Question:
Is it permissible to delay ghusl for janaabah until after dawn has broken? Is it permissible for women to delay ghusl following the end of menstruation or post-natal bleeding until after dawn has broken?
Answer:
Praise be to Allaah.
If a woman sees that she has become taahir (pure) before Fajr, then she has to fast, and it does not matter if she delays ghusl until after dawn has broken. But she should not delay it until the sun is risen. The same applies in the case of junub (impurity after sexual activity), one should not delay ghusl until after the sun has risen and in the case of men, they should hasten to do ghusl so that they can pray Fajr with the jamaa’ah (in the mosque).

No, I am not assuming anything... I am just saying that if praying Fajr at the right time is important to you and you don't want to take a bath at that time, then after you have completed the 'act' (once or as many times as you wish), cleanse yourself (e.g. take a bath) before going to sleep. Just get the priorities straight: going to sleep rightaway after intercourse or not praying fajr at the right time. Choice is yours.
In addition, I suspect we need to differentiate a practicing muslim couple from the stereotype couples we have become accustomed to see around ourselves and in the movies and TV. Perhaps your definition of a "normal couple" is limited to what you have seen, where as in many cultures this may be quite different.

The term, "ghusl" just means washing your whole body. Shower, bathtub or sponge bath, all meet the definition.

I would consider only shower, i.e. flowing water as ghusl. Remember that the correct ghusl in the eyes of Sharia' have some farz in it.
Anyways, as far as intercourse is concerned. My limited knowledge have read this:
It is compulsory to do GHUSL before prayer so if one indulges in this act at night GHUSL is compulsory before sunrize due to the fajr prayer and not the sunrise itself.
If one (married) couple chooses to have intercourse (with eachother) more than once, they should do WUDU before each intercourse.
One should perform ablution before going to sleep. This suffices. Ghusl is not obligatory.

Aray baba, aap balti mein paani bhar karr naha lo, woh bhi ghusl hota hai. Aglay waqtooN mein shower nahi hotay thay.
Plus, if there is no water available, then what to do? Islam has solution to every problem, and its the niyyat which matters. Lets not limit it to shower. Thankyouverymuch. :)
