Marine's grieving father in blaze

The father of a US marine serving in Iraq has set himself ablaze in Florida, after learning his son had been killed.
Carlos Arredondo broke into the van of the marines who told him the news, doused it with petrol and set it on fire, police said.

Mr Arredondo was taken to hospital suffering from 50% burns but is expected to recover, officials said.

His 20-year-old son, L/Cpl Alexander Arredondo, was killed in combat in Najaf on Tuesday.

The soldier’s stepmother, Melida Arredondo, said of her husband: “This is his scream that his child is dead. The war needs to stop.”

After the marines had informed him of his son’s death on Wednesday afternoon, Mr Arredondo, 44, walked into his garage to collect a propane tank and some fuel.

He then smashed a window of the van and set it ablaze despite attempts by the marines to stop him.

They dragged him from the van and put out the fire. The marines were unhurt.

His wife said he knew what the marines were going to say when he saw them approaching his home in Hollywood, Florida.

“It doesn’t surprise me that he was so traumatised. He went crazy,” she said.

Police Captain Tony Rode said: “The father was in disbelief, same as any of us would be after hearing this kind of news. You can only imagine what this father was going through.”

Mrs Arredondo said her husband, an immigrant from Costa Rica, “was very proud of Alex serving”.

But the soldier’s grandmother, Luz Marina Arredondo, told the Miami Herald: “I blame [the government] a lot. They send them like guinea pigs over there.”

I guess he did that because he wasn’t a true American, if he was he would have been so happy his son died for Operation Iraqi Liberation “OIL”.

Is this a proper Islamic response to a fathers grief? Are you so callous and Anti-American that you do not feel any shame at your behavior?

As bizzare as this incident is, mocking a father who lost a son is ignorant, and an embarrassment to Muslims.

Companions of terrorists celebrate peacemakers’ death. This goes perfectly with the typical Araab instincts of mutilating dead bodies.

Pakistanis share the grief with American people. Pak-nation has lost its soldiers trying to rid its land of Araab MnM terrorists as well. I hope one day Shaddad (OBL) and his hasheeshins will be brought to justice.

This is just so heart breaking. I can't imagine being notified of such horrible news. Hopefully the father will recover soon.

Well let's hope this sends a signal to all the war-mongers out there, the war is abroad but the impact travels home one way or another and sooner or later.

how many time do i have to make it clear that this was not to "celeberate" the father's death

this was a mocking jesture at the US Iraq Policy , and its leader who have brought thier nation to to this end

what a waste father gets upset over his young son who dies in Iraq because of Bush and his band of crooks telling lies to the whole world.

the blame lies at the door of the White House and the Pentagon these the guys that created this whole mess!

Whats even sadder is that no news coverage by CNN, MSNBC, or FOX.

Maybe because they are not white?
