Let me say flat out that I know jack about classical music or any other kind of music for that matter. But what I’m going to say is probably going to offend a lot of folks (some of them dead). Why is that some of our “best” female singers sound so mardana?
I mean take your run of the mill Malika tarannum Noor Jehan. I’ve heard some of her good work like Chandni Raatein and it is awesome. But she probably sounds more man than a lot of folks I know in real like when she really decides to let it rip. The same goes for your Naseebo Lal pai jee. God that woman (if that’s what they call 'em these days) is absolutely repulsive. Her voice would probably wake me up if I were dead. And then there is Ms. Humera Chunni, the most vocal representative of the third gender. Then, you also got yourself Shazia Manzoor, who only needs a simple operation to cross over officially, she’s got the haircut and the rest of the stuff in line.
Why can’t our singers sounds like sweet lil 16 year olds like Lata or Asha (whichever one)? I mean we do have some half decent zanana singers like Munni Begum, Nayyara Noor, and Naheed Akhtar who all sound feminine. We need more of them and they are not too bad on the eyes either but sheesh Naseebo Lal and Shazia Manzoor make me glad I’m nearsighted.
any thoughts on this extremely important matter?
I personally think we should trade singers. The behans can give us Naseebo Lal and Shazia Manzoor, and we’ll give you Shehzad Roy and Shehzada Faisal to restore some balance in nature.

mere sohnay moron,
listen to me, read my post. I made no comment about the musical competence of these artists. I made a comment about the "feminine" factor of their voices which in my humble opinion is somewhat lacking.
Are you telling me that Nayyara Noor and party had nothing to do with sur taal? Noor Jehan's voice was a paata hua dhol. Don't like it then shove it and while you're shoving how's about you grow a pair of eyes?
This is due to dominance of Lahori (Punjabi) culture in Pakistan movies and music. They liked not only big gals in their movies but also like women singers with mardaana voices. If the whole movie scene were in our karachians control you would have heard more nice 16-year-old feminine voices in our movies.
Sambrialilan, in Pakistan females have traditionally sung at a lower pitch [the term would be “lower octave”] - it’s the way it was 50 yrs back and it’s the way it’s now. I dont know why - but it’s the way it happens in Pak, it’s the convention they follow. They actually have really good voices [especially Fariha Pervez] only if they could sing at a higher octave. There was this track Fariha Pervez sang at a higher octave and I couldn’t believe it was her.
I once posted here that these punjabi singers (female) are too nasal - and then I got gandhay tamaatar thrown at me. What do you expect when the vast majority of people you are talking to are punjabis?
They sound LIKE men. That means their voices are heavy and deep. They don’t sing in high octave, as someone above mentioned. Men sing in lower octave. Guys in general don’t sound exactly as Noor Jehan and Shazia Manzoor. Its a way of describing the voice, by comparing it to a man’s. You took too many science classes, proudpaki. There are such things as a metaphor and similie. Not everything is to be taken literally, that’s for the M-billi.
I never could stand Noor Jehan's nasal voice or Abida Perveen's Allah hoo or whatever. I have always wondered why Noor Jehan became so famous. She was my late great-grandmother's favorite and I remember I used to run out of the room every time she would come on tv :) haha!
It probably is just preference, but the nasality in people's voices gets to me.
I am willing to listen to Nayyara Noor's "Phir sawan rut ki pawan chalee" any day over Noor Jehan's collection of Faiz sahab's ghazals. Gosh I can't even imagine Noor Jehan auntie singing "Phir sawan rut"!
Are you talking about the same Faiz Sahab who after hearing mujh sey pehli si mohabbat that Noor jehan sang, said that she sang it soo well that this ghazal no longer belongs to faiz, but to Noor jehan? Noor Jehan made it big even before Pakistan was made. It was her choice and Pakistans luck that she decided to come to Pakistan.
Nayyara Noor is a class of her own. No doubt about her talent, actually i am listening to Jale tou jaloo gori by her right now as i am typing this.
reason for this cud be that in olden days ustads were all men so those who got their talim from say bade ghulam ali khan or so sang along with him in his octave so they naturally cultivated deep bassy voices.. not probly because lahoris like big gals in the industry..
samb was lost during the last great GS civil war. He will not be coming back. He is one of the few people to resist GS's temptations pretty much completely.
