Re: Manto The Film
Hearing great things about Manto the film and the performances of Saba Qamar and Sarmad. Please post your reviews.
Re: Manto The Film
This is just great. Excellent. What an all round amazing project. Well done to Sarmad. These are the type of movies Pakistan should make. No over the top depressing sob stories, over the top crass, vulgar, second hand Bollywood copies. We just need original cinematic gems with powerful story lines, memorable and complex characters and a good screen play with proper quality dialogues. I think for young emerging filmmakers, it is a very good idea to venture into biopics as this is an excellent way to draw audience in, and make something they can instantly relate to.
I agree that Saba Qamar was a bad, very bad choice for Noor Jahan. She just looked and acted like Saba Qamar, I did not see Noor Jahan in her at all. Mahira Khan would have made a much better Noor Jahan as young Noor Jahan had nice pulpy, slightly innocent and feminine look. She was very charming and expressive without looking too catty and mischievous the way Sabar Qamar appeared.
Re: Manto The Film
Looks like I have to watch it as well after getting good reviews
Re: Manto The Film
**Manto the movie will be shown at the Harvard-Brown film festival on Harvard campus, **Saturday, October 17 at 5 PM. It’s a free and unticketed event which is open to the public. Sarmad Sultan Khoosat (the director) will be there as well
Folks in the new england area are encouraged to join. I am planning on attending and asking friends to join in as well.
Re: Manto The Film
^^ This is fantastic news.
Re: Manto The Film
@Jolie
Saba qamar was perfect choice to play Noor jahan. Mahira can only play herself she has no range whatsoever.
Re: Manto The Film
So i saw the movie at Columbia and Sarmad was there as well. Awesome acting by Sarmad but the movie was a bit dull in the end. I also HATED Saba Qamar as Madam as she played the role as a gaudy version of herself. And to think people were praising her to the skies over her LMAO. Oscar chance? I am not sure…maybe Dukhtar has a better chance of being selected for the oscars.
Re: Manto The Film
Forgot all about this thread! I saw manto last weekend at Harvard. Sarmad was so awesome and I thought the movie was made very creatively. One story was shown in a Charlie chaplain- esque way and another in slo-mo. Spoke to sarmad before the movie and found him a very sweet and down to earth guy. ayesha jalal ( the historian) was there too and she basically RUINED it for everyone though. She has this annoying habit of projecting herself on everyone and was plain nasty and abnoxious. Made so many snide comments about sarmad and mocked his acting. my hubby who is also a professor commented that he doesn't grill his students this much at their phd defense . She thankfully incurred the audiences wrath afterwards which she rightfully deserved. I don't know why desis keep inviting her to events. She's always very abnoxious and can't control her "I am better than you " attitude. Psycho!
Re: Manto The Film
Yeah Sarmad was more than nice, he was quite cute BUT he spoke ALOT an didn't leave room for many questions. Everyone was in their element, except for that horrible Saba Qamar. I also thought Sania Saeed's role was beneath what she is capable of. She gave me "Ahat" vibes with her three daughters and difficult husband. Sadly i don't think the movie has much of a chance at the oscars. With the hype created by the fakeass Malala, Dukhtar has a better chance of goading the white hollywood bias.

Re: Manto The Film
It's just not Ayesha Jalal, quite a few journalists and intellectuals have pointed out the absurdities in script and distorting certain facts and characters which were quite important. I don't see this film as anything spectacular just commercial stuff.
Re: Manto The Film
I hope Moor gets selected for Oscars.
Re: Manto The Film
This film if getting a lot of praise from the self-proclaimed intelligentsia of Pakistan, so it would be interesting to see if it is really that good.
Re: Manto The Film
^ “self-proclaimed intelligentsia” LOL well said ![]()
