Man's Ego

If you are working with a guy, and he has a huge ego, and you have to work with him…

How do you approach a dude like that? Without pulling a PCG and slamming him in a well-written similarly ego’ed up response that ought to shut him up for a full lifetime, or at least send him home crying?

Because we can’t do things like that at work, we’ll get fired. :frowning:

Re: Man's Ego

it depends how much you have to interact with that person. if that person is your boss or boss' boss u have to watch out, and massage that ego until you can get out. forget about what the claims about culture are if it is not being practiced.

Re: Man's Ego

Close line him.

Re: Man's Ego

Well as X2 sajd, you'd have to validate the egoist's views and abilities before offering counter-opinions and in order pto encourage them to cooperate. Blech!

Re: Man's Ego

Spot on X2.

Is this person your manager or a colleague? you will have to adapt to different strategies with either of them. If its the manager , then exactly what X2 said and also what RV suggested. That is the route forward.

if its a colleague, then you just try to keep it professional with them , if they start becoming irrational, stop the conversation before it gets nasty. Try to find a common ground on which both can operate.

If all else fails , involve a third person to help you both find common ground or rules of interaction .

Is his ego impacting your work , health and well being in any way?

Re: Man's Ego

If it's a colleague, I don't see any reason to massage his ego whatsoever. I hate when people know a person has a problem that is blatant and just make it worse by appeasing the individual. Kind of seems like a toddler who hasn't evolved into adulthood. :s

If it's a boss or someone who has some say in my future career or opportunities, I would just do whatever work I have to with them, without making too much chit chat and try my best to ignore their behaviour. Sometimes we deal with people who test our limits.. best thing to do is just to ignore it and move on. I can live with dealing with a horrible person if it means putting food on the table for my family.

Re: Man's Ego

I feel for the poor guy whoever he is.
