Manmohan's daughter takes on the US Army

WASHINGTON: The Indian government may be pussyfooting around US human rights abuses in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, but the tigress in the Prime Minister’s family does not digress. Amrit Singh, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s youngest daughter, has taken on the Bush administration over the issue of prisoner rights that is convulsing Washington these days. As a staff counsel with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the New York-based Amrit is in the team of attorneys whose dogged persistence has forced the US government to release documents that point to prisoner abuse and torture. The documents were released only after a federal court ordered the Pentagon and other government agencies to comply with a year-old request filed under the Freedom of Information Act by the ACLU and other civil liberties organisations. The documents reveal that a special operations task force in Iraq sought to silence Defence Intelligence Agency personnel who observed abusive interrogations and that the Department of Defence adopted questionable interrogation techniques at Guantanamo over FBI objections. Among the documents is a June 25 memo that describes how the task force’s officers punched a prisoner in the face “to the point he needed medical attention”, failed to record the medical treatment, and confiscated DIA photos of the injuries.

Another memo from Vice Admiral Lowell Jacoby, Defence Intelligence Agency chief, entitled “alleged detainee abuse by TF 62-6”, describing how DIA personnel who complained about abuses were threatened, had their car keys confiscated and ordered “not to talk to anyone in the US” or leave the base “even to get a haircut”.

Amrit Singh thinks there is more to the prisoner abuse issue. “While these documents confirm the systemic nature of detainee abuse, it appears that the government is still withholding many more documents that shed light on which high-ranking officials are responsible for that abuse,” she said in a ACLU statement.

“The public must know the full truth about the US government’s involvement in this scandal.”

Singh said the ACLU is continuing to press the government to disclose more documents and will return to court if necessary to ensure that every relevant document is released.

Singh, who is the Prime Minister’s third daughter, studied law at Yale and has kept a relatively low profile in the US, seemingly unaffected by her father’s dramatic political ascendancy.

Manmohan Singh took time off to spend with her during his visit to New York for the UN session in September.

His economist friend Jagdish Bhagwati, who teaches at Columbia University, thinks Amrit is as brilliant as her father during his youth.

Prisoner abuse linked with the Amerikkkan administration yet again huh damn, and these amerikkkan gupshup members keep saying there is no abuse it is only 1 incident

Cool! Didn't know that Manmohan happens to be a greencard PM as well. Bharat happens to be ahead of Pakistan. We have greencard Prez, and blue-passport PM. Bharat on the hand is one up by having an Italian ruling the roost.

p.s. greencard PM simply means, that he has the ability to acquire gc through his daughter.

But you gotta admit that none of Indian PMs have to use it. They all retired from politics gracefully or were murdered in their homeland. None of them had to leave country and live of asylum somewhere else. :D

Yes...it is ok.. Murders can be done by one disgruntled Idiot. And Politician all over the world have been murdered in past be it India,Pak or USA.

But if none of your politician is able to live in the country with dignity after they leave their Post then there is something wrong with the system. That is what I refering too.
It doesnt matter if Manmohan's daughter lives in USA or Japan we know that he will gracefully retire and will live in India till he dies. No one will force him to go to USA.

If you are referring to Pakistan, than naturally you are wrong. Other than the two corrupt former Prime Ministers who ran away, there are many former Ministers and Prime Ministers (whoever is not dead already) that live in Pakistan and lead comfortable lives. But really, that is not the topic of this thread. Lets re-focus back on Manmohan's daughter and the work she is doing.
