what exactly happens at a manjha/mayoun ceremony? how is the actual rasam any different from what they do at the sanchaq/mehndi?

I think the rasams are pretty much the same, but the atmosphere is more relaxed and less formal (traditionally) because it is only "ghar ke log." The other side is not present at the mayoun. In many ways, it is the day everyone close gathers to help do the final preparations for the mehndi and wedding, etc.

I don't know if Mayo and Manjey are the same..
But basically as Sahar said, Manjey is just the girl's side. Her family side garlands here, gives here gifts etc. Final preparations, her gifts to the groom is orgznied, etc.etc...its more like a girl's family only celebration.
The applying for sandalwood paste is not performed at this time but rather during Sanchak.
