^ Manhole is the most commonly used word for it.
And in case you really dont know - it is meant for maintenance men to use for whatever maintenance work they have to do underground. Hence, man hole.

They were only referred to as manholes until the early 90s... later renamed to maintenance holes for the same reason you've started this thread :)
I like to use the term utility holes.

Thanks to a recent Supreme court ruling, our indian friends will be enjoying many manholes in their country
