(Sorry to my FB Friends who have seen this pics and the captions)
Every year, my workplace celebrates “engineer’s recognition day” and take us somewhere for fun, and then lunch and gifts; kind of like a field trip if you may. Give it to the engineers, and rather than going to a park for a bbq picnic, they will go to a nuclear reactor, and that is what we did today.
In 1945, USA dropped two bombs on Japan. Little boy bomb was a Uranium fuel based bomb and the target was Hiroshima. Second bomb was nick named Fat Man and was a Plutonium fuel based bomb. That Plutonium based nuclear fuel was produced at the B reactor of Hanford, WA.
You heard of Area 51? This must be Area 52. Literally in the middle of nowhere. A piece of american history.
Ground breaking happened in Oct 1943. Plutonium production started in Sept 1944. “Fat Man” bomb dropped over Nagasaki, Japan, in August of 1945.
72 people died during construction.
