I am considering that I re-use my mother’s jewelery main set for the wedding day. Its also a cost cut measure that i am working on
Anyway, the problem is its a very traditional antique sort of design. Its all gold with little small white coloured beads hanging below it. The earrings are circular in shape. I want to customize it to make it look modern and up-to-date. I am not a fan of traditional styles. What can i do to the style and stones and shape etc.? I want to keep its original base as is but maybe add some styling & designing.
This link is 50% near what the original looks like:
Are you going to get your set melted and have a new one made or you just want to remove the stones and add features to it ???
If its the latter, you will first have to ask a jeweler whether he can make any changes to the existing set ?? Most of the time its not possible. Plus its an old one, are sure about the clarity, is it 21 crt or 22 crt etc ????
Does it ( there is a term called lakh which was used sometimes in the older days in sets ) have any lead in it ??? The stones in your existing set might be difficult to remove. So to make changes to a set is sometimes not feasible.
So you will have to think abt all that first.
Of course it your melting it and making a new one, have the set broken down in front of you, coz they will literally beat it with a hammer to remove all the stones and stuff.... so things will be flying here and there and every fleck of gold counts. They will deduct the stones weight, charges you a small fee for the melting , take their cut and give u a final amount.
This is what my sister did, she got two small gold sets on her wedding from the boys relatives , terrible design , we melted them and sold it off, went and bought one big amazing set instead !!!!
I am a bit confused when u said u wanted to keep the base the same , that is why i asked the above questions ???

I am not melting and making a new one. Yes it is that Nau-Lakha necklace that used to be back in old days. It is nice but traditional; i want to add some stones or pearls or something to make it look new and fancy!
Nau-lakha : as in worth nine lakhs when ur mother bought it and now worth a million ????
What i meant by "lakh" was Lac or Lacquer, the kind of stuff they use to set the stones in kundan and jadau.
So u just want to add some stones or pearls along the entire length and pendant of the necklace, they would have to solder little hooks and will hold the stones/pearls on to it. You will ask to ask the jeweler what/if it can be done ??? It would have to be done a very highly skilled "karigaar" lest they ruin ur already existing set.
I wouldn't change it. If you want something different, sell this and get a new one. You are not likely to get the same quality of gold and stones these days, and you won't be able to tell for sure.
if its like the photo, its gorgeous and u can b sure that nobody's making them aymore, so its bound to be a hit! just get the beads changed to match ur clothes...plus,it'd b nice to wear something of your mother's n ur big day,it'l give u strength :)
Its Nau-lakha as in 9 strands below it. It's not like the picture, that was just an example. It is pretty but its way too traditional looking. I'd prefer adding some stones, lacquer & beads here and a drop below it. I want to make it look up-to-dated; it looks very antique but still very pretty! I have pictures of it but i am unable to upload on GS due to some error.

Sahar I don't want to sell it because
-It's of my mama's wedding. Its special!
-It's pure gold and is nice looking
-It's considered taboo to sell wedding jewellery
^ Right, but you have to be very careful when modifying something so nice. They might change the stones in it, replacing it with something less pure. It might get ruined, because pure gold is far more delicate than what they use these days.
