Mallus (malwari, malbari) are used in a form of abusive word. They are every where in UAE - clerks, accountant, teachers, manager, business tycoons, restaurants (south Indians, people from Kerala, language = malyalum). But also people from Madras, who speak madrasi, & who speak tamil, are mistaken of Mallus. You can see them with colorful shirts & Lungi ;)
Majority I think they are popular because of their eating habits (they carry their food everywhere they go & it smells) this oil on their head (which stinks) and the color combination they do (red with yellow and Gold) so whenever we do something outa fashion, our friends shout out "How Malluishi".
This word is equivalent to Paindo which we use in Pakistan.

actually, in UP, Mallu baaandar [Mallu, the monkey] is what we know about this word. Mallu Baandar is fat, older, lazy, lives off on food given by passers-by.

probably from Mallah [boat sailers]...Mallahs ply small boats in local rivers taking folks across the rives...they do this all day to make a meager living. some of them are also a fishermen.

I think Malhi is caste in Sindhi Hindus. There is this famous Indian Sindhi writer Gobind Malhi.

i think yes…mere Khayaal se qadeemii Khajuraho ke mandiroN meN iske nuqoosh aaj bhii 'ayaaN haiN…dunyaa jahaan se log aate haiN dekhne aur ‘sar’ peeT ke chale jaate haiN! 
Khajuraho Madhya Pradesh meN hai aur Jhansii ke qareeb hai.
