Salaam,
I read in another thread that 1 of the 4 schools of Sunni judisprudence, the Maliki Fiqh’ says dog meat is Halaal.
Is that true?
Moti (pearl: my doggy) is next on the menu. ![]()

This is sick...please do not quote such stuff with references
Re: Maliki Fiqh' allows dog meat?
As far as my understanding and my belief is that ..yes Maliki do believe so ..but only in such a case where you canNOT find anything else which is Halal. In Islamic Shariah terminology it is called a ''Rukhsati'' where basically you are excused because of an impossibility .. and in this case ..that it is impossible to find Halal meat / or anything to satisfy ur hunger ..then and only then as a last resort ..if dog meat is available it is Halal for you because you have no choice..
oh and its not hala cos u cant find Halal meat ..it can be anything .. therefore, nowa days .. i would belive its impossible that you wouldnt find an alternative to satisfy ur hunger ..grab some fruit lol
This is a bit like .. say your caught by the enemy and they feed you Pig meat ..and they force you to eat it or they ll shoot you ...Now here again you as a Muslim have that option of Rukhsati .. either take the bullet or u eat .. so now this pork becomes jaa'iz for you because your life is in danger ..and if you dunt eat you ll die anyway of hunger .. This rule is from Hanafi Fiqh ..
So basically Dog meat being Halal is more to do with the Rukhsati :)
Re: Maliki Fiqh' allows dog meat?
I remember hearing a tape by Abu Ameenah Bilal phillips in which he mentioned that the meat of a hyena being allowed!
Can anyone guess which meat is most commonly eaten by us but is disallowed in our faith ?
That of our dead brother / sister.
(Unfortunately disgraced people like me love to eat it and repent after ruining other's reputation)
According to Maliki fiqh dog meat is Makruh not Halal or Haram.
I don’t know who said it’s halal.
^^ Bhai Nosherwan should get the "Best BOTTOM fishing" award for starting threads like Urinals, dog meat and other IMPORTANT aspects of our daily lives. Shabash.
I have lived in North Africa (majority Maliki sect), and I can tell you that people there do NOT believe that dog meat is halal, nor does anyone consume it! I don't know 'officially' if there is any circumstance in which dog meat is permissible but makruh according to the Maliki school.
However...
The Maliki school, unlike the others, does not believe that dog *SALIVA *is nijis. Dogs were used as hunting companions during the Prophet's time and would finish killing wounded animals that were hunted, or would fetch animals that had been killed and bring them to their masters. Abdul Malik did not find any evidence that he considered convincing that the Prophet and his companions ritually cleansed meat that they hunted with the help of dogs, so his conclusion was that dog saliva is not nijis.

Make a lot of sense. Any links to this info?
I haven't posted the minimum posts to GS yet to be allowed to put a URL reference in my post, unfortunately. But if you do a google search for "maliki fiqh dog saliva", the fourth result, "Imam's Corner: The Basics of Fiqh", contains a long and thorough explanation of the status of dogs in the different maddhabs...
Imam’s Corner : The Basics of Fiqh
interesting. You were correct. The actual hadees just says if the dog touches your utensils then wash them. These days it is common sense to wash the utensils if they get touched even by human saliva. Oh well this bit of info should do it.
This is digression from the original thread though.
It’s the following post which lead me to believe dog meat is allowed in Maliki fiqh.

So it’s Makrooh? What’s that mean? Just like disliked but not sinful to eat? Enlighten me people.
I believe the post you're referring to is a misinterpretation of the Maliki stance on meat that has been hunted by dogs/touched by dog saliva. I don't have a definitive reference for you, but even if a dog is considered ritually pure (saliva, fur, others parts), it would still not meet one of the basic requirements of halal: that no 'fanged beast' (carnivorous land animal) is permissible for human consumption.
Note here that the Maliki school also considers the body and saliva of pigs to be ritually pure--in fact, they consider the bodies and saliva of all animals to be pure. But this just means that you don't have to make wuduh after touching them---it does not mean that they're all halal for food consumption!
My belief is that consumption of dog meat is clearly haram, but that the Maliki school allows greater freedom regarding skin-to-skin contact with animals and their saliva.

Sh. Hamza Yusuf is a Maliki and he distinctly said that the Maliki fiqh have concession on dog meat that it is makruh and not haram. Now it is possible that some Malikis do not have this opinion based on a sheikh but the collective general opinion of the Maliki fiqh is as above. If you speak for the Maliki madhab as an authority then I can accept what you say otherwise I need a reference from a scholar. I hope my saying that Hamza Yusuf said this is enough evidence from the onset.
Now let it be known that all fiqh schools have their criticisms in other areas ...
Re: Maliki Fiqh' allows dog meat?
