Malik cleared for one-day series
All-rounder Shoaib Malik has been passed fit to return to the Pakistan squad for the one-day series against England, beginning on 30 August.
The 24-year-old, a veteran of 118 one-day games, injured his elbow before the first Test and had to return home.
“We have informed the team management that Malik is now fit and has been cleared to play by the medical panel,” chief selector Wasim Bari said.
No decision has been made on whether to retain Mohammad Hafeez for the series.
Hafeez joined the tour to bolster the batting, and promptly made 95 opening the batting in the final match at The Oval, his first Test for three years.
“I think he should stay for the one-dayers as he is a very useful all-round player but let us see what the management wants,” Bari commented.
Malik will be a useful addition to the Pakistan squad, having made 18 fifties and five centuries, as well as taking 98 wickets since his debut in October 1999.

LONDON: Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer is elated at the prolific form of Mohammad Yousuf and is hoping that his top batsman would continue getting runs all the way to next year’s World Cup in the West Indies.
“Yousuf has been in great form and that is really good for Pakistan. I hope that he continues playing like this till the World Cup,” said Woolmer, visibly pleased at his team’s return to form after a series of disappointments earlier on this tour.
Yousuf has scored 1123 runs in eight Tests since the start of this year which makes him the highest run-getter in 2006 so far. He has been in great touch since the start of the current series against England and has a tally of 631 runs that includes scores of 202 (Lord’s), 192 (Headingley) and 128 (The Oval).
Woolmer was all praise for the experienced batsman comparing him with the legendary Colin Cowdrey. “He is so graceful, so stylish and reminds you of Colin Cowdrey.”
The Pakistan coach, however, admitted that Yousuf’s excellent touch has failed to save his team from its first Test series defeat in England since 1982. “It’s disappointing to see that in spite of the fact that one of your batsmen has been scoring so many runs, the series has been lost. It goes on to prove that cricket is a team game and you cannot win matches through individual performance. Your entire team has to deliver to do it.”
Woolmer was happy to see his boys recovering from back-to-back defeats at Old Trafford and Headingley by dominating England on the first three days of the final Test here at The Oval. “It is really satisfying to be playing like this,” said Woolmer.

Re: Malik cleared for one-day series and Woolmer compares prolific Yousuf to Cowdrey
i'm glad malik has recovered from his injury... but i don't even mind mohammad hafeez that much.
he's practically a shoaib malik: good batting, awesome fielding, and great bowling.
his one over today was surprisingly good.
as for bob woolmer praising yousuf, it's well deserved. he has truly emerged as the most consistent and deadly batsmen for Pakistan and has really shut up all the critics that went as far as saying he should be dropped and replaced by faisal iqbal.
