no. It is malgudi. Gudi= temple in village colloquialism . Many villages and small towns in S.India with old temples have been named with a “gudi” at the end. Malgudi is one such fictional place.

i thought it was about a rag merchant as mal-gudRii in Urdu means rag merchant who deals in ends of fabrics both used and new. hamaare gaaoN men bahot aate the mal-gudRiye who used to trade crockeries and utensils for rag pieces.
