And too a lifetime representative, totally unsure why. Pakistani political scientist, diplomat, columnist, and military strategist Madiha Lodhi appointed as Permanent Representative to United Nation on Monday. But either way this is the name widely acceptable to not only Govt but to the army as well. Infact in many segments she’s considered more as a army woman.
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Monday appointed the country’s former ambassador to US Dr. Maliha Lodhi as Permanent Representatives to the United Nations.
Foreign Office announced the appointment of Dr. Maliha Lodhi as Permanent Representatives of Pakistan to UN as decided by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and she will assume her responsibilities in February 2015.
Previously, Maleeha Lodhi has twice served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States (1993-1996 and 1999-2002) and as Pakistan’s High Commissioner to United Kingdom (2003-2008).
She has also served as a member of the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Affairs (2001-2005).
Dr. Lodhi has taught at the London School of Economics and Political Science, been a Fellow at the Institute of Politics, Harvard University, and an international scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center, Washington, DC.
She is a member of the National Defence University’s Senate and a member of the advisory council of the London-based International Institute of Strategic Affairs.
Dr Maleeha Lodhi will be the first woman to represent Pakistan at the United Nations. This will be Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s first senior appointment of a female to his foreign policy team.
He has chosen a person with established diplomatic credentials who is also among the country’s leading public intellectuals.
The appointment also showed that the Prime Minister is reaching out to professionals outside party circles and the bureaucracy to draw on expertise and experience.
The appointment also reflected a desire to widen the team at a time when Pakistan faces mounting foreign policy challenges amid which the UN will be an important forum to advance Pakistan’s case and project the country.
She was first appointed as Ambassador to the US by the late Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
She dealt with two different administrations in the US, that of President Bill Clinton and President George W Bush.
Her second term in the US was especially challenging as it coincided with 9/11. Handling this situation urged Lodhi to take to the airwaves and she defended Pakistan vigorously on television, becoming a prominent face on Western networks.
On the 60th anniversary of Pakistan’s independence she organized a big music and cultural event at Trafalgar Square, the first such display of public diplomacy undertaken by any Pakistani envoy.
Dr Lodhi has been among the leading writers and experts on foreign and security policy in the country and a frequent speaker at the National Defence College.
She started her career in journalism becoming the first woman in Asia to become the editor of a national daily.
The former ambassador to US is the author of two books and in 2010 edited a popular collection, called `Pakistan: Beyond the crisis state.’
She received the Hilal e Imtiaz award from the government for public service. -APP

Re: Maleeha Lodhi: Pakistan's new embassador to UN
^^ have you not noticed the tone of Foreign Office towards India, Have you not noticed that the new Afghan president visited GHQ and spend great deal of time there, Have it went unnoticed that Cheif of Army have a pro-longed visit of US, discussing all the matters... China contacting GHQ for their terror issues...
Yes all this have went to GHQ...
I still think it is not bad deal for Political govt, they should focus on Power and infrastructure development which will result in improved economy by end of their tenure
Re: Maleeha Lodhi: Pakistan's new embassador to UN
Foreign Affairs and Defense along with Finance are a country's core Ministries...Economy is in ruins anyways. if they are not under the democratic government then be ready for anything, yes, including another coup de'tat by the armed forces.
i can't imagine a democratic government which has no control over it's foreign, finance and defense ministries. what's the democracy worth then?

Yes you can thank IK for this entire mess. MOFA was out of the hands of the military and then IK came with his bull****. You want to see what started this all? Look at IK.

this thread is not about IK...it's about a woman called Lodhi who happens to be appointed Pakistan's Representative at the UN by none other than the Pakistan Army...who is in-charge here?

You obviously don't get it. Until August 14, NS was in charge of foriegn policy. In a deal making exercise the military backed away from supporting IK to get control of FP again.
Read any of the news analysis from Sept regarding Pakistan they will all mention it. IK is doing everything in his power to destroy our democratic set up.

i've been watching Pakistani TV channels for a long time and i'm aware of the political situation prevailing there.
so, the decision to launch Zarb-e-'Zab was made by Nawaz or RaHeel Shareef?

It was made by Kiyani in 2011. But was unwilling to take the political decision. So PML (N) had 4 months of negotiations and after those failed the Government and military annouced the launch of the operation.

i slightly disagree, the higher ups in the govt were convinced that the operation is only way out... but due to whatever reason, this agreement came by end of October/beginning of November... the weather condition didn't permit any operation in that region hence govt played negotiation-negotiation and army made their plans.. which is why everything went well..

That may very well be the case, I honestly am not sure save for what was said in the papers. But on this both government and military coordinated to get the job done and they have done a good job so far. Inshallah it stays that way.
Re: Maleeha Lodhi: Pakistan's new embassador to UN
i don't agree with either one of you. i believe RaHeel Shareef is the one who took unilateral decision and the N$ had no choice but to go along with his decision. he did NOT announce launch of Zarb-e-'Azb right after it started. he came on TV only after a day or two.
his minister and foreign office tried to taint COAS while he was in the US on an official visit. those morons played 'good' vs 'bad' taliban game thus trying to discredit RaHeel.
