Whichever is the most knowledgable and able to adapt to the different learning styles of the students. Could be male or female.

in the same manner as young married teachers. I know in the UK you are not allowed to touch a student.

I personally think that first few years (KG till 5th grade maybe) female teachers do a far greater job than their male counterparts. After that, it depends upon the command and knowledge of the subject that they teach

It was quite the opposite for me, I had male teachers till 4th grade (all boys school). But the teachers I had were great and by far left the greatest impression on me, they set me on the track that enabled me succeed at studies later. In fifth grade I changed schools, moved from an American curriculum to a British one which was co-ed and all my teachers from then on were female. Personally I felt my earlier male teachers taught me the basics very well and when I changed schools I found everything piss easy (maybe it was the british curriculum). They even recommended my dad to move me up one class (which my dad didn't agree to).

I believe , specific gender doesnt create a good teacher, rather , it depends on the individual and their teaching skills and ability to reach out to the students.
How young , unmarried teachers should behave with their male students is an interesting question with a very straight forward answer :
This is the time of a students life when they are growing and learning through experimenting and looking at others around them ... Its a perfect time for a teacher to instill values like respect, honour other's presence etc in the young minds ...
She should be an example of the best human values so that these young boys grow up to be the gentlemen that every woman around them will be proud of.

The effectiveness of a teacher is determined by a combination of attributes, including, but not limited to his/her subject matter knowledge (in terms of accuracy and comprehensiveness), communication skills, and fairness.
Re: your second question, I think it applies equally to male and female teachers... married and unmarried... I've had my fair share of interesting incidents to know this by now :-)
