I watched this movie for the first time today. I must admit. Tears came out of my eyes when the credit started rolling. I was ignorant about the History of Malcom X. This is a real inspiring movie and has increased my faith in my religeon more. The message which is being taught today in these Western countries today is dont hate and this message was taught in Islam several hundred years ago. And it inspires me that how a convicted felon from prison sees the light of truth and becomes an ambassador of Islam. As I am not much aware of the History of Nation of Islam would anyone suggest any good books or URLs about Malcom X, Elijah E Muhammad and Louis Farakhan. I especailly want to read about Elijah and see how he got started preaching Islam and what he taught.
Is this the right forum for this?
WHAT A STRANGE COINCIDENCE !!!!
I just finished his autobiography yesterday and quite seriously, it was one of the best autobiographies that i have ever read.
I learnt more about Black history from reading bis autobiography than i could ever have learnt by reading text books. His whole life is so inspirational to Black people who've had to struggle against white opression for so many centuries.
It's really weird cuz the book was written over a period of about two years. Within these two years Malcolm X went from being a stunch supporter of the Natiuon of Islam to finding out about Elijah Mohammed and reverting back to Orthodox Islam. His way of expressing his hurt and anger, yet remaining calm cannot be repeated by any modern writer. I quite honestly hink that he was one of the greatest thinkers of our time.
Loved t/ movie w/ Denzel Washington's superb acting but t/ book as always is a lot better than t/ movie. You can actually feel t/ emotions in his autobiography. Excellent book. I truly believe to this day, Denzel so deserved t/ Oscar. I think t/ Academy just felt obliged to hand t/ Oscar to Al Pacino cuz he'd been nominated 7/8 times in t/ past. I dont discount Al's acting in "Scent of a Woman" @ all, I think he did a very good job, but when compared to Denzel in Malcom, simply put, no comparison.
Also, becuz t/ movie according to most Whites was so controversial (labelling him a violent hate monger for life w/out knowing a thing about him) they didn't want to give any more credibility to Malcolm X. That was truly one of his best works. Anyone seen "Mississippi Massala"??
Yes its a great movie. Denzel Washington was great in it. Unfortunately Malcolm X didnt get the same publicity that MLK got but I guess this movie changed things a lot. Although I dont think the "Nation of Islam" has anything to do with Islam -- the religion. Their leaders are basically racists who publicly make generalized anti-white statements and talk about black supremacy.

i agree with bks views
Malcolm X did sever his ties with the "nation of islam" and followed Islam after learning more about it.
the movie is superb, and shows and important aspect inthe history of struggle for equality here.

Knowledge my dahling, comes from within. Always remember that. I really don’t have that much ‘knowledge’, if I’m interested in a subject i read up on it. I wouldn’t know the first thing about subjects that bore me, i.e. science and technology.
As for the book being too long, it’s really not that long - only about 500 pages. I just spend the whole of sunday in the garden reading it and getting a tan. I look like a proper little paki now !!!
I really would encourage you guys to look it up.

Just kidding Sadi! Naraaz mat hona! I wanna be in your good books! Mind mat karnaa!
yes i have seen parts of it in my humanities course..and my college library had some good books too..
But i was already inspired by him since 3 years ago when i read about him on net while reading several muslim sites..and Malcolm X as some people may recall him as Malik Shabaz was the first muslim whose stamp was introduced in USA a while back.
If you need info on him or nation of islam..there are plenty of sites listed on yahoo..
Qruis--The stamp was seven bucks at local post office ( I was short one dollar).
I found the book a bit more defined. The movie is awesome and so is Washington. I just thought that the emphasis on his life before converting was a tad too much.
The book has some really awesome quotes which are quite dominant throughout the movie.
Mississippi Masala, I've yet to watch.
Said by Malcom X :
"Tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today. "
"You want me to cry for some Jews... why should I cry for some Jews? ... 6 millions jews died.. 100 million Africans died"

"It is impossible to shape the present into a better future without having some knowledge of the past."

He said that he wanted black children to learn to speak English the way it was meant to be spoken."If you're not ready to die for it, put the word 'freedom' out of your vocabulary."
"I dare to dream that one day history may say that my voice disturbed the white man's smugness and saved America from grave catastrophe"
I'm the man you think you are.... If you want to know what I'll do, figure out what you'll do. I'll do the same thing...only more of it."
"Looks like the chickens have come home to roost"
( Malcom X, upon hearing of JFK's death.Three weeks earlier, Kennedy authorized the assasination of the President of Vietnam.)"We didn't land on Plymouth Rock - Plymouth rock landed on us!"
"We have to keep in mind at all times that we are not fighting for integration, nor are we figting for separation. We are fighting for recognition...for the right to live as free humans in this society."
BABY DOLL--here'z one of my fav:
