Malaysian Hockey Federation 6 Nations Tournament

Pakistan defeated Malaysia 4-1 Sunday in a six nation invitational field hockey tournament in Malaysia, a warmup for the World Cup next month.

Pakistan joins Australia at the top of the table with six points after the completion of the second round Sunday. World and Olympic champions the Netherlands are languishing in last place, with two losses.

Pakistan, which beat the Netherlands 3-0 in their first round matchup Friday, followed it up Sunday outplayed the home team with a dazzling display of speed and stickwork.

Pakistan goaled once before half time, then wore down a sturdy Malaysian defense with constant pressure which produced three successful goal strikes in the second half.

Pakistan’s forward line, led by mercurial striker Shabaz Ahmad -making an international comeback after three years - won over the 6,000-strong crowd with speed and slick ball skills which dominated the match.

Malaysia, which has not beaten Pakistan since the 1986 Asian Games, kept the visitors at bay in the early stages thanks to some fine saves by goalkeeper Roslan Jamaluddin.

Roslan was unlucky to concede a penalty corner in the 29th minute, setting up Pakistan’s Saqlain Muhammad to score easily from a set piece play.

The visitors stepped up the pressure in the second half. Shabaz led the way with a rising shot from the top of the semicircle which left Roslan no chance - a field goal to Pakistan in the 46th minute.

Malaysia, in a rare counterattack, saved some pride when Mohamad Tajol Rosli deflected a long ball into the Pakistan goal.

Pakistan snuffed out any fightback by the home team when Kasif Jawad pounced on a defensive error, weaved past three Malaysian players and slotted the ball into the goal.

The visitors won another penalty corner one minute from the finish and specialist hitter Sohail Abbas was on target to ensure a comprehensive win for Pakistan.

**Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Japan and Pakistan are playing the invitational tournament, which is a warm-up event for World Cup in Kuala Lumpur Feb. 24-March 9. **

i have a strong feeling that we will win the world cup this year.
