UNITED NATIONS: Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak pleaded Saturday for Muslims to unite against extremism, warning that sectarian violence risked tearing the Islamic world apart.

“I believe the greatest threat to Muslims today comes not from the outside world, but from within,” he told the UN General Assembly.

Najib voiced outrage at violence between the Sunni and Shia sects in Syria, Iraq and Pakistan, noting that nearly 5,000 Muslims died in conflict in the three countries in the holy month of Ramzan.

“It is time to end the killing and concentrate instead on building a common agenda for peace and prosperity,” he said.

“I believe that peace-loving Muslims – the overwhelming majority of Muslims – should unite against the extremists who use our religion as an excuse to commit violence.” “Our task is to reclaim our faith by articulating clearly the true nature of Islam – the religion of peace, of moderation, of tolerance,” he added.

Najib said he was committed to “mutual respect and inclusivity” in Malaysia, which is more than 60 per cent Muslim ethnic Malay with sizable Chinese and Indian minorities.

Malaysia is generally known for its moderate form of Islam, although conservatives have occasionally banned concerts by Western artists and tensions have risen over custody of children whose religion is disputed.

Najib’s choice of subject at the world body marks a shift in tone from former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, who was known for his strident denunciations of the West during his 1981-2003 tenure.

US President Barack Obama, who has been seeking greater ties with Southeast Asia, will travel to Malaysia next month on the first visit by a US leader to the country since 1966.

To hell with what the world thinks. They just turned a blind eye to Assad...don't want them to get involved, but to take steps that seem in the direction of normalizing relationships is a joke.

Second, the Islamists are not the SOLE cause of violence in the Muslim world.

In Pakistan, the situation is unique. Elsewhere, it is the average Muslim who is getting butchered by (secular) government forces.

So, let's get rid of the myth that what happened in Kenya is the same as what happened don 9-11, or is the same as what the TTP does in Northern Pakistan. Such delusions service no one.

So who is bombing muslims in Pakistan, Iraq, Libya, Mali, Yemen...oh I forgot its blackwater, muslims cannot do anything like this...these delusions are the reason for the down fall of muslim countries.

if black water is involved in terrorism in Pakistan, shouldn't the government be having peace talks with them instead of TTP?

Hmm all those American invasions of Kenya and Nigeria hmmmm yes everything is America's fault.

I mean of they attack a so called terrorist base in NWFP the obvious response is to blow up a church full of Pakistani people in response.

Could British have occupied and colonized India without help from Indians? No doubt US is involved in a lot of things going on in the world. The issue is that they are involved for their own sake. USA doesn't care about you.

Having said that, US cannot do anything at all without help from 'insiders'. Now even is you recognize that it is actually US that is promoting extremism and violence in 'Islamic' countries, wouldn't it still be good for us if we fight extremism? Wouldn't it eventually hurt US if we oppose their sponsored terrorists and extremists?

All the traditional democratic and non-democratic govts in Muslim countries are scared of Arab Spring which ultimately will spread throughout whole Muslim world i think, In sha Allah.

Statement of PM of Malaysia could be caused by some pro Islam actions of minister of religiosity affairs. Another major reason could be, some media channels have started some programs on deen.

Change is reaching Malaysia.

Malaysia has always been a moderate country, hence the Muslims there are coexisting with 40 % non Muslims (Chinese and Hindu).

Which 'insiders' helped america invade Iraq and Afghanistan?
Probably you will say northern alliance in Afghanistan. But, do you really think that US was unable to do this in Afghanistan without the help of northern alliance?
