Even though it can be prevented and treated, malaria continues to be a great threat and a cause for concern in Africa. Preventative drugs have severe side effects and they are not always effective. As you mentioned, thousands die everyday. While living in Zambia, malaria was so common even though it wasn't in the heart of the tropics. I think everyone in my family had malaria atleast once while we lived in Zambia. In South Africa it's not so bad.
