malaria and infants

Hi,
Im taking my baby to pakistan in a few weeks and I’m concerned about mosquitoes and malaria in Pakistan. Ive bought infant bug repellent but thats all. Im not aware if there is any kind of medicine available for prevention of malaria, specially for infants. have you guys ever given your kids anything for malaria ? I’ve booked an appointment with my kids doc to see if if he has anything to give; but thats not till end of this week .

Re: malaria and infants

How old is the baby…?If she is less than 6 months, they wont give her anything..!
I took my 6.5 month old daughter to Pakistan in 2010.Her pediatrician wanted me to see an infectious disease specialist before I left.I did and I was given a prescription for some antimalarial drug ( I do not recall the name now).I knew she would be staying indoors and the whole house was screened and no serious mosquito issues, plus I was not too keen of the side effects of the medicines and the duration of use was about 3 months,so I never gave any to her.She was Alhumdullilah fine.
I did get her flu shot once she was six months old (but I was traveling at a time when flu is more common).

Re: malaria and infants

NO ingestible medication is considered safe, as far as I know.

Keep bug spray with you. We also got those insect repellent bands that you can wear on wrists or ankles (I kept it on the ankle cuz the smell is strong). It might be too big for your child, but you may able to cut it or be creative with it to make it fit. You can even get and put up a mosquito net to keep over baby (and you!).
