Re: Malala Yousufzai attacked
Very disappointed to see the last 2 minutes of this show. Imran Khan condemns the attack on Malala Yousufzai but explicitly declines to name Tehreek-e-Taliban as culprits because he says he fears reprisals against his party workers.
Do you want his party workers to get killed by TTP etc?
Re: Malala Yousufzai attacked
Pakistan enraged over attack on teen blogger - CNN.com
Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) – The Taliban shooting of 14-year-old Malala Yousufzai for blogging against them was so brazen it commanded the attention of many in a country weary of extremist attacks.
**An angry chorus of voices in social media, the street, in newspapers and over the airwaves has decried the attack as cowardly and an example of a government unable to cope with militants.
“I blame the Taliban, first and foremost,” columnist Sami Shah wrote in The Express Tribune, a local English daily. “I blame the government. All of it.”
**
Malala was slowly recuperating Wednesday after surgeons worked for three hours to removed a bullet lodged in her neck.
On Tuesday, Taliban militants stopped a van carrying three girls, including Malala, on their way home from school in northwestern Pakistan’s conservative Swat Valley.
One of the gunmen asked which one was Malala Yousufzai. When the girls pointed her out, the men opened fire. The bullets struck all three girls.
For two of them, the injuries were not life-threatening. For Malala, it was touch-and-go for a while.
“We are happy that she survived, but are worried too about her health condition,” said her uncle, Faiz Muhammad, who is with her at a military hospital in Peshawar.
On Wednesday, police took the van driver and the school guard into custody for questioning. They also said they’d identified the culprits.
Meanwhile, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack and issued an ominous threat.
“If she survives this time, she won’t next time,” said a spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban. “We will certainly kill her.”
Mian Iftikhar Hussein, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa information minister, said he was declaring a bounty of $100,000 for the capture of the culprits in the attempt on Malala Yousufzai’s life.
Pakistani Army Chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani visited Malala in the hospital and delivered a simple message: “We refuse to bow before terror.” He also noted that the Taliban lack respect for the “golden words” of the Prophet Mohammed – “that the one who is not kind to children is not amongst us.”
“In attacking Malala, the terrorists have failed to grasp that she is not only an individual, but an icon of courage and hope,” the general said.
The chief minister of Punjab said he would bear the cost of Malala’s treatment, calling her “the daughter of Pakistan.”
The head of PIA, the national airline, said he was putting a plane on standby to take the teenager “anywhere in the world if needed” for treatment.
Two neurosurgeons, one in the United States and one in the United Kingdom, have also offered to fly to Pakistan if needed, the interior minister said.
Throughout the country and around the world, Pakistanis, hurt and angry, prayed.
**“Malala is what Taliban will never be,” said Murtaza Haider, the associate dean of research and graduate programs at the Ted Rogers School of Management at Toronto’s Ryerson University, in an opinion piece in the Dawn newspaper.
**
**“She is fearless, enlightened, articulate, and a young Muslim woman who is the face of Pakistan and the hope for a faltering nation that can no longer protect its daughters.”
**
“If the Taliban wants to fight then they should pick on someone there own size,” a girl said on a local news channel.
Shamila Chaudhary, a former U.S. National Security Council director for Afghanistan and Pakistan, told CNN the incident reverberates among women and girls and even conservative Muslims.
“The Pakistani Taliban don’t have a lot of support in the Pakistani society,” she said. “They don’t offer social services and justice, they don’t offer any alternative to weak government.”
**This latest incident “makes them more unpopular” among masses of people who view the aspirations of Malala and the Taliban’s resistance to them as a “fight between good and evil,” said Chaudhary, a senior South Asia fellow at the New America Foundation.
**
Twitter, the closest thing to a barometer of public opinion, likewise lit up.
“Wasn’t the brute who put a gun to Malala’s little head born to a woman?” wrote Kamran Shafi. “Did he have sisters, aunts, a wife or four? Bloody filthy terrorist!”
Pakistan’s picturesque Swat Valley was once one of Pakistan’s biggest tourist destinations.
The valley, near the Afghanistan border and about 186 miles (300 km) from the capital city of Islamabad, boasted the country’s only ski resort. It was a draw for trout-fishing enthusiasts and visitors to the ancient Buddhist ruins in the area. But that was before, militants – their faces covered with dark turbans – unleashed a wave of violence.
They demanded veils for women, beards for men and a ban on music and television. They allowed boys’ schools to operate, but closed those for girls.
It was in this climate that Malala reached out to the outside world through her online blog posts.
She took a stand by writing about her daily battle with extremist militants who used fear and intimidation to force girls to stay at home.
Malala’s online writing led to her being awarded Pakistan’s first National Peace Prize in November.
“I was scared of being beheaded by the Taliban because of my passion for education,” Yousufzai told CNN at the time. “During their rule, the Taliban used to march into our houses to check whether we were studying or watching television.”
She said that she wanted to be a political leader, that her country “needs honest and true leaders.”
The Taliban controlled Malala’s valley for years until 2009, when the military cleared it in an operation that also evacuated thousands of families.
But pockets remain, and violence is never far behind.
For Pakistani public officials, Chaudhary said, the incident serves as a reminder of the Taliban’s ends – keeping girls from going to school and imposing hardline religious and cultural values.
Many are in denial and haven’t accepted “the extent the Taliban will go to impose their cultural values.”
There have been other examples of violence against women, Chaudhary recalls, including the Taliban flogging of a woman caught on video a few years ago.
That was “a trigger event – it pulled a lot of the political elite out of their denial,” she said. “I see this instance as something similar.”
Chaudhary said there’s a misconception across the world that the political elite sympathize with the Taliban.
That’s untrue, she said. They are scared of them and the possibility of violent retribution against officials and government installations. If the government doesn’t talk about this latest issue and have justice served, it will be a “step back,” she said.
**Sami Shah, the columnist, said the ruling Pakistan People’s Party shares blame.
“There can be a million excuses why the Taliban can still operate with impunity in Pakistan, a lot of them legitimate. But if you are the ruling party, then you must accept responsibility for your failures. And the PPP has resoundingly failed.”**
CNN’s Nasir Habib reported from Islamabad; Saeed Ahmed and Joe Sterling from Atlanta. CNN’s Shaan Khan and Noreen Shams also contributed to this report.
Re: Malala Yousufzai attacked
Who support drone attacks ? No one , But supporting Taliban is an offense . My mods are warning so I shall avoid here but there are many threads here discussing this issue , Some started by Khoji .
It was question for PPP whether it will support drone attacks or not, they agreed, they won the elections, simple.
Re: Malala Yousufzai attacked
Do you want his party workers to get killed by TTP etc?
Ofcourse we dont want his party workers getting killed.. Who would vote for him if they were?
All of you who oppose drone attacks, be honest with yourself. Consider the following.
The Taliban are evil incarnate. They have killed and will kill far more people then any drone ever will.
Their badmashi will leave a lasting mark upon the fabric of society. There existence is a far bigger threat to the long term prosperity of Pakistan then any drone will ever be.
As far as "sovereignty" of Pakistan is concerned, stop fooling yourselves. Pakistan has effectively ZERO control over those areas controlled by the terrorists. North Waziristan, and in fact, many parts outside of N Waziristan are no longer effectively controlled by the state.
The Pakistan army is not willing to do its job. The Pak govt and opposition are all cowards and incompetent to boot. The intelligence is neurotic, with half of them trying to bring about the caliphate, humiliate America and liberate Kashmir at any cost, and the other half making sure journalists remain in line.
The anger at drone strikes is misplaced. Any war, will result in casualties. You are fooling yourself. The people here who condemn the drone strikes but demand the Pakistani govt and army go in and clean up the place are deluding themselves if they think the Pak Army can do the job without an casualties... Its a guarantee that if the Pakistan army had effective intelligence they to would use aerial assaults. No one would risk the lives of soldiers if the could take out a target with aerial assaults. Would it be any different if the areial assaults were done by the PAF? Or if the drones were controlled by Pakistanis themselves? The opposition seems to be more against the fact that its Americans doing the killing. Had it been done by the Pakistanis themselves, then that would be ok somehow? We can kill our own people thank you very much!
The drone strikes are conducted by the US because the Pakistani establishment does not allow ground soldiers into the tribal belt. The terrorists go into Afghanistan, attack and kill Afghans, run across the border and do all this with impunity? Then when the US ask's the Pak govt to take care of the problem, they refuse! So whats the solution? Just let these terrorists go scot free?
Either the Pak govt should send in the Army, (or Army send itself in), or let the US take care of the situation. If you do not allow the US to send in ground soldiers, then all thats left are drone strikes, which kill militants, even as the kill civilians. Either way, Pak soldiers, US soldiers, drones or airforce jets, this is war, and people will die. If you want to fight, then get ready for some hard realities, otherwise, sit back and shut up while the Taliban kill more civilians, more Shias, more police, soldiers, bomb more schools, shrines and destroy more of your country.
The only valid argument any of you might have is that drone attacks produce more not less Taliban. Well, regardless of how this war is tackled, there wil be casualties and the potential for more Taliban. At the end of the day, there is no way to save people from losing loved ones in war. It will happen. The question is, how do you conduct this war most effectively, and with the fewest casualties. The question isnt one of drones or no drones, its question of drones or something else.
Re: Malala Yousufzai attacked
**PESHAWAR: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government has announced Rs10 million in reward for anyone who identifies the terrorists who attacked 14-year-old Malala Yousafzai, provincial Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain told the media on Wednesday.
**Hussain requested all peace-loving people from across the world to pray for the early recovery of Malala who was shot by Taliban gunmen on Tuesday while she was on her way to home from school.
The minister reiterated that Malala is not being sent abroad for further treatment as the doctors had advised her complete rest for two days.
The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) had claimed responsibility for attacking Malala and had called her “pro-West”.
Malala began standing up to the Pakistani Taliban when she was just 11, when the government had effectively ceded control of the Swat Valley where she lives to the militants.
**NA, Senate adopt resolution
**
The National Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution against the terrorists and saluted the services and courage of Malala.
“This House salutes the great services of Malala Yousafzai. The entire nation is proud of her and condemns the incident in which Malala was injured along with two fellow students Shazia and Kainaat,” said the resolution.
The House also pledged to continue fighting terrorism till it is rooted out from the country and demanded the government to bear all medical expenses of the injured students and give exemplary punishment to those involved in the attack.
The Senate also passed a unanimous resolution condemning the terrorist attack on Malala.
**Protests
**
As many as 200 people gathered outside Lahore Press Club on Wednesday to protest the attack on Malala.
The protest arranged by the Lahore wing of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI) lasted for about an hour during which the participants chanted anti-Taliban slogans, carrying a banner in Urdu reading, **“We want our daughters to be like Malala…. We pray for her recovery.”
**
Workers of other parties including the Labor, the Workers’, the National Student Federation and Bond Labour Federation Front joined the protest at around 6pm. Carrying a banner reading, “Those with guns fear an unarmed girl,” the protesters chanted anti-Taliban slogans.
Some NGO workers also peacefully protested the attack. Children of various government schools along with their teachers joined the protest walking from the Charing Cross to the Lahore Press Club.
A protest was arranged at the Liberty Roundabout as well.

Re: Malala Yousufzai attacked
Pakistan might be enraged over the attack on this brave teen but here on GS we are more concerned about scoring political points by supporting or opposing the point of views of our beloved leaders. Shame really. What priorities we have.

Re: Malala Yousufzai attacked
"I love American drones".
Disgusting.
Why disgusting?
You would have given same statement if anyone you knew or close one may have got slaughtered ... that is, their throat cut in public and then further their dead headless body got mutilated in most absurd way by Taliban ... or someone you knew got killed in Taliban suicide attacks or ... ... ...
Teacher is living in reality and his comment is quite appropriate coming from those who are living along and suffering from the atrocities and fitna of Taliban. His only friend is American Drones and Pakistan armed forces who are killing or trying to kill Taliban animals.
Just imagine, drones killed many Taliban terrorists, though in doing so some civilian casualties also happened. One thing is certain, that is, none of the civilian casualties were intentional.
On the other hand, Taliban animals have killed intentionally 1000s of time more people than total killing from Drones and Taliban killings are happening in most horrendous ways full of atrocities. People living under the shadow of Taliban are not only living in fear but their life has changed and they cannot even practice their religion or live their life with freedom ... but worse is that all victims of Taliban, many 1000s times more than drones could ever kill, were killed or maimed fulfilling their duties in government jobs (government servants on duty) or leading their life as an ordinary innocent civilians.
If anyone says that Taliban are killing innocent Pakistanis in 1000s and is making life of all Pakistanis hell because Drones are killing few of them, then these people should support Pakistan government and desire of Pakistanis to kill each and every Taliban Animal in revenge of 1000s of innocent Pakhtuns and other Pakistanis Taliban animals intentionally and brutally killed or maimed.
Re: Malala Yousufzai attacked
I personally support Drone attack and believe it is not violating Pakistan sovereignty as all attacks are happening with consent of Pakistan government and armed forces. I think, drone is one of the best ways to tackle Taliban and Al-Q animals, as till now, most of their leading leaders got killed not by Pakistan armed forces or by any other means, but by Drones.
Just like Imran Khan claiming that he could not say anything bad against Taliban because he is scared of his workers life, in same way Pakistan government is denying their consent to USA for Drone attacks in public to save themselves and lives of their political workers from Taliban attacks and attacks from Munafiq political leaders who may believe whatever but would come in public to lie.
